OK,
Was taking a look at the interior of the car yesterday, I am pretty sure I am going to buy some new carpet, the old stuff is pretty bad.
Anyway, while poking around, I noticed my seat belts are really frayed. I'm not sure why I never noticed before, or maybe it just got worse recently. I'm not too comfortable leaving them as is, they look unsafe. Is there anything better than stock replacement? Is it safer to have a harness bar and some shoulder straps? I know a harness bar can be installed with no drilling, what about the actual harnesses? Do theymount to the lower seat-belt mounting points (by the door and on the transmission tunnel)? Convenience isn't a huge issue, the car is for fun only, it is not something I use to run errands, so I am not getting in and out all the time. I figure if I am going to make a repair, I might as well consider improvements. Has anyone gone down this path? Any pictures? Recommendations?
Thanks,

OK, I did some research here and elsewhere. It seems the Brey-Krause harness bar is the only one safe enough to actually support the straps, the rest seem to just act as a guide for the straps between the roll cage and the seats.
Does anyone know what straps I could use with the Brey-Krause bar? I'm hoping not to have to drill any holes, just use existing holes. Any links to products would be great. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

harness bars, and 4+ point seat harnesses are NOT DOT legal, so if you get into an accident the insurance company may not have to pay for any of your damage as they are not DOT approved equipment. _________________ 3 928s, |

There is a similar law here but if you get an engineers compliance plate/certificate then its legal. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Yep, I figured they were illegal. Been in touch with one of the guys from Livermore, who sell the Brey-Krause harness bar, and they sell a 6-point setup that can be installed on the stock Porsche seats without removing the OEM seatbelts. So, the original (and frayed) belts would remain in the car. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Anyone know why they are illegal? Seems that they are a little bit safer, but would they cause internal injuries?

Some monkey will install them using sheet metal screws through rusty floor boards. I'm sure the government doesn't want to be bothered regulating this, so it is easier to make it illegal. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

I have 4 points in my 931 and feel much safer with them. Although like everything else it's how you use them that makes'em or breaks'em.
The lap portion attaches to the stock bolts on either side of the seat and the two uppers wrap around the roll bar harness bar. If you get them you need to be very carefull where you mount the two uppers. They NEED to be as level to the top of your shoulders as possible. There is a DOT legal 4 point for sale in the US but you'd need to contact them for Canadian info.

The wifes car has fitting points for seat belts and because the belts were not original (its 34yrs old for chrissake) we had a hard time getting it passed for the rego check.
They wanted us to take them off until we get an engineers compliance plate.

Alright, f**k it, I went the whole 9 yards. Talked to livermore, a half cage was the same price as a harness bar and much safer, so I went with that and a set of harnesses. The stock seat belts will remain in the car for legal reasons. I figured I am going to replace the carpet anyway, while it is out I might as well drill some holes for the half cage and get that done at the same time. If I ever decide to start tracking the car, which is always a possibility, I'll be a little bit safer. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |
