So, I know the car will start now, however as i suspected the oil pump isnt working.

Now logic would suggest that having stood for a couple of years the pump has probably lost its prime so simply needs re-priming (by pooring oil into oil filter hole and cranking backward?).
However, I know that the previous owner did the headgasket and also o-rings on the oil cooler? This I have no idea about and will need to research but i recall reading that if the oil cooler has been disturbed then the relief valve will have required re-aligning?

So knowing this, where should I start? I've had experience of sticking pressure relief valves before on other engines and also had nightmares of not being able to establish oil pressure.

Any tips?

I'd see if the gauge and sender are working first. If you ground the gauge wire (at the sender), does the gauge peg?

The oil pump is drive by the crankshaft pulley, which is held on by friction alone. If the the crankshaft pulley is not torqued with the 150 ftlbs spec. then the oil pump will not be driven, and you will get low or no oil pressure.

If someone has removed the oil cooler housing, and did not use the oil cooler housing alignment tools when replacing the oil cooler housing, the OPRV could hang, and cause low or no oil pressure as well.

Thanks dude, I will check that torque first off - have been waiting for a mate to give me back all my big sockets! I hope it is something that simple but knowing my luck it wont be!

Engine sounded too noisy for it to be the gauge - also neither the light nor the gauge registered so unlikely that both of those items would fail?
Ah and i forgot, the brand new oil filter was still dry. had there been pressure this would have been full when i removed it im guessing.

Well, after a couple of hours of attempting to prime the oil pump via both the centre hole of the filter and through the relief valve we finally achieved oil pressure!!
Remarkably this involved getting a piece of pipe, sealing it to the centre filter hole and sucking......my dad got a nice mouth full of oil eeewww! but it worked amazingly! As soon as he'd done that and went to crank it oil poored out the filter hole! Dont ask me how or why, all i care about is that it lives!

That reminds me of this one time I did a front engine seal job on a 944. With that came a new oil filter and oil. When I got the car back together, I started it and it never built oil press. I thought it might have been a bad filter so I replaced it with a new Mahle unit and still no press. I put the old used filter on and it came to life, more than 5 bar. After that I put a new filter on and all was good! I think it had lost its prime sitting overnight with no front seal, so air was able to get in and bleed it all away. I think your solution was great (lol)!
