| Hi All, I just bought a 924 on ebay. Not the most sensible thing to do, but car is now in my garage now. 1980 Met Blue 86K. Car has been sitting for over a year and hasn’t driven much in two years. Engine doesn’t idle very well and spits out black stuff from exhaust. I bought and installed air filter today. I have oil filter, gasket and proper oil (all correct and genuine parts) but need to lift car to get at it!! Any ideas on how I should go about this restoration project. Any advice welcome. I am a complete novice. The engine always starts so i guess thats a good sign?? |

Yes, that's very good. Now don't touch anything and it should stay that way.
Peruse the "924 FAQ (Technical)" and "924 Technical Section" links above first, then if what you're looking for isn't there, just about anything else you'd need to know can be found with "Search" (also above) (use more than one keyword and click "Search for all terms" to narrow down the results better). A printed copy of the Haynes Porsche 924 manual comes in very handy even with its' occasional misprint.. There are links to online versions of it floating around that can be found with the search function.
If still lost, then feel free to ask away! (But not tooo much - some of us are on our last breaths and can easily have the life sucked out of us by the inane. Not by you of course, but it has happened - they know who they are. Don't make me name names!)

your already ahead of the game, being smart enough to ask how to lift the car before placing a new crease in the under body. thats promising!
My suggestion , like smoothie, is to read, read, read.... go through the old posts here, keeping in mind there are many different methods and opinions. get the haynes manual, download the porsche parts (PET) publication there are allot of great diagrams in it. get the factory manuals if you can.
plan out what you want to do before doing it, and research those smaller projects before hand. I would recommend going through each system, one at a time, to find out what you have, and where you need to concentrate your efforts. these are old cars, and its important you inspect all the systems, and get the maintenance items up to par.
you can expect to find things like suspension bushings, shocks, brakes, and so on needing attention. many have a tendency to worry about the engine , but forget the rest. a great running power plant isnt much good if you cant stop because the brakes have been ignored...

Thanks Smoothie and 924 guy, I downloaded the PET pdf. Already I can see its going to be helpful.
My garage is small, just large enought to fit the car in so its going to be an interesting experience lifting it up! |

I don't get it. Why would a rock star be restoring an old 924? Can't he find a boxter or something to drive?
'Course with the lyrics he demonstrated, he probably doesn't sell many records, though the audience seemed to like him.
Or is he the guy w/the receding hair line that looked more like a 'Vette owner?

Mk is in Buckinghamshire. i commute to London daily (by train).
Reason for 924 is i think its an ideal car for a beginner like me. i had ideas about a Triumph TR7 but they just rust.
Easy to get parts here for specialist european cars.  |

Jesus a TR7 ? I didn't know there were any of those anymore until I saw one on the highway recently. I don't think the 924 is known for it's electrical problems as much as a TR7..... Hell I thought the TR8 they fixed the problems ? _________________ Ryan Moone

See both a TR7 and the similar looking Fiat X-19 quite regularly around my area.
eurocarparts and gsfcarparts carry most things you'll need in the UK to look after a 924 and at a fraction of the price other places charge. _________________ Mars Red '78 Euro 924 n/a
