|
|
my 924 just started making a funny grind felt at the gear shifter when I am above 40mph. It happens when I try to downshift from 4th into 3rd. It doesn't do it much, just at the last second when it pops into gear.
I also hear a funny noise when the car is running in neutral and the clutch is out. It's coming from the drive tube, I think. When I push the clutch pedal down, it stops. Any thoughts? _________________ Michael

Could that be the clutch and worn syncros?
How old is your clutch? It sounds like it's partly engaged and then when you depress the clutch pedal you disengaged it. |

the clutch has only about 2000 miles on it at the most. The car set for 10+ years until last year. Is there any fluid in the tranny that I should maybe check? _________________ Michael

So is it a 10 year old clutch that "you" put 2,000 miles on? Or is the clutch a year old from brand new.
I had a clutch sort of "go out" like you describe. I had a rear main seal leak that the clutch was absorbing and then it started slipping just a little. |

Oh geeze, you could search for that, I'm not sure if bad oil could cause this, do you have any leaks? |

Maybe the clutch needs re-adjusting. ?
Yes, check that fluid. There'll be both fill and drain plugs - make sure you can remove the higher-up fill plug before removing the drain. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

the clutch was put in last xmas time and was new then. Is there a special type of fluid I should be buying? I do have a few oil leak on the rebuilt engine and have suspected the rear main seal. But it is new, maybe I didn't get it completely seated when I pressed it on. Could the other noise I'm hearing be the drive tube? It only makes that noise when in neutral and clutch not engaged.
I just yesterday adjusted the play in the clutch and got it better. But for some reason I can't bark the tires going from 1st to 2nd. I know I probably shouldn't be trying it, but come on, how can I not? I just seems to not have the same "pop" as it did when I first got her back on the road. Almost like I'm losing power.... _________________ Michael

| From all I've read you should really not be abusing the transmission, they work well but are old and aren't meant to be hammered. How long have you been doing that? |

I've only barked them 2 times. I don't run it too hard, just wanted to try after I got everything done on the engine. I know this car isn't a racer but I know it's not a complete turd too. After waiting since I was 10 yrs old for the car, and getting it last year, it's hard to not test it a little. It's not my primary transportation, so if I break something, I just get to learn to fix it. When the tranny does finally go, I'll put a 5 speed in. _________________ Michael

An EP grade oil in the 80 to 90 range is specified. You'll need two litres.
I sneaked a couple of ounces of moly compound in there at my last change. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Yes: remove the transaxle, split the gearbox, strip the gears and have a good look at the synchro rings... _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)
