hey all- I just bought new interior pieces for my 924 and am having trouble getting the old piece out. It's the piece that covers the wall area by the rear speakers next to the seats. It also goes around the small rear window. I can get all the screws off just fine and loosen it but I can't get it off the window area because of the rubber seal that goes around the inside of the window. The leather goes up under it (rubber seal) and I can't get if off. Does this rubber seal on the inside of the window just pull out? I don't want to mess up the rubber and have to spend more $$$!! Any ideas?

You have to remove the glass first.

ok, I wondered if that was the case. So what's the easiest way to remove the glass? Do I start from the outside? If so, where?

Not sure if this is the case with all years..but on the 76-78 models you will see a trim piece that is counter-sunk into the rubber on the outside. This is the locking mechanisim for the channel of the rubber.

Once you remove this piece you should be able to go to the inside and with force..push out the window.

IF you have trouble..use a flat bladed screw driver and flip the edge of the rubber over the metal pinch weld of the body that the rubber locks over.

To reinstall you simply put a piece of heavy gauge string or wire into the channel of the rubber around the entire circumference of the rubber. Tuck in down well. Over lap the ends and insert the ends in to the passenger compartment. Have a buddy hold the window in place with gentle force while you climb in the back of the car. Pull on on end of the string on a 45 degree angle and the rubber will slowly ride back over the channnel until back into place around the circumference.

Then reinstall the lock channel on the outside.

good luck, mine are hanging in my garage, they dont like to go back in... rest is pretty easy though, but i would use a bit of trim adhesive on the vinyl before putting the window rubber back to help keep it in place and tight.

Mine had/has the quarter window rubber without that lock channel. Removing the window with the non-channeled rubber involves peeling the edges of the rubber toward the glass at the inside and simultaneously pushing out on the glass.

When I went to deal with the rear speakers and had to remove those panels quite a few years ago, I was able to lift the bottom of the rubber enough to get in and pull the vinyl out from under it without removing the windows. (Then those upper pieces of the vinyl stayed out until last year when the rubber pieces got replaced with new, but with due diligence (much difficulty) they coulda'-shoulda' been tucked back in place much sooner.)

I managed to move the rubber surround enough to get the vinyl out and back in without removing the back window. Its probably not exactly as neat as if you remove the window, but its good enough for me.

This sounds like about a 12 pack job. I can see myself either ruining the rubber on the outside or breaking the damn window. I think I'm gonna try Steeny's method and just try to push the vinyl up under the rubber. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll be removing the window. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the input guys!!

A buddy of mine with a 944 once took it to a generic stereo shop for new speakers. "No problem" on the window removal, they said, "do it all the time."

Well, he got a call around the time the car was supposed to be done, and was told there was a delay. A few hours later, he picked it up and all was fine. A few weeks later, he found broken glass under the floor mat from where the stereo shop had busted the window. . .and they never said a word!

It really is a piece of cake...I guess it comes with years of pratice. The cars and trucks of the 70-80's had all the rear and fronts windows installed this way.

i agree, it sounds allot worse than it is, just the trim gave me issues. popping the window out and back in really easy after you do it once to get the hang of it.

Alright, I'm gonna give it a try today. I have to finish replacing my rubber brake lines with braided stainless and then I'll start removing the window. I'll let you know if I run into any problems and need to order new glass!! Thanks boys!!

Ok, well that didn't work.. The trim piece that is counter sunk into the outside of the rubber is out. Now do I just push from the inside and the whole thing comes out? To me it looks like the rubber is all one piece and the glass is in one of the channels inside it and the whole thing pushes in from the outside. I'm thinking I just need to push from the inside, does this sound right?

No! You need to take 2 flat bladed screw drivers and from the inside of the car...push the rubber up and over the "pinch weld" of the window opening of the cars body. Once you get it locked over the edge you can just use one screw driver. It's best to start at the bottom and once you get around the bottom corners.....a small amount of pressure will get the window out.
