I noticed today that the tach on my red car will not move past 4,000 rpm. It seems to get stuck right at 4,000. Do I need to crack to case in the gauge to check for an obstruction, or is this something that might be caused by the sensor?

Ha Ha!!! Figured it out....
I cracked open the tach case tonight, and the little paper sticker inside the case had dried up and come loose. The VDO sticker with the Porsche part number stamped on it had wedged itself right in the middle of the gauge mechanism, causing some resistance right at 4,000 rpm.
Think I'm starting to get the hang of this game...
