Ok - first major tune-up is underway... a couple of simple questions.

Question 1: Does this distributor cap look old? How do I get the rotor off?

The bakelite rotor is practically welded onto the shaft! Just bust it off?

Question #2: How do I get this crud out from around the spark plug holes?
I have tried compressed air with the plug in, but no effect.

I was thinking of trying a long cotton swab, but I don't want to knock anything into the cylinder.

Thanks,
BC

Twist the corner of a shop rag and stuff it into the hole. Hit the crud with brake cleaner then compressed air.

Yes, the distributor cap looks like the terminals are burnt/eroded. Past due for replacement.

Yes, breaking the rotor is often necessary because they are installed at the factory with locktite on the retaining screw, and many people fail to replace them for ridiculous amounts of mileage.

Leave the spark plugs in place and clean BEFORE you remove the plugs. Use engine cleaner spray, followed by water to flush the debris, then compessed air to displace the water. After you removed the plug/s the trash that is going to fall in has already fallen in.

Tune up done except for fuel filter - purrs like a kitten now.
Only need to do the fuel filter this weekend.

Bonus time: Hella headlights from the parts car - they cleaned up nicely!
I won't have to run the high beams to see the road at night any more.
