I'll know more tomorrow, but what are the chances the motor is OK?

Did it boil over or run rough?

If it was completely empty of coolant and driven very far, I hope it's your lucky day....

Ran 2.5 smooth, no weird noises either. Shaggy would be dead for sure.

It's alive. I can't believe it survived that, it was bone dry, and the temp was PINNED, although I don't know for how long.

Now I just need to work on the wife's "gauge awareness."

Wow, that's flippin' scary. I've had to pound in the the same "gauge awareness lesson" with my oldest. My wife has the same issue too, although she's not driving any of the p-cars regularly enough or solo for it to be a concern. But younger people today are so anesthetized to mechanical awareness...everything is just s'posed to work. My wife gets so frustrated when we're out in these older cars and I fret about stuff, watch the gauges, comment on how things just might be a bit abnormal, etc.

Glad your S wasn't hurt.

OK, so what should I do next? I'm thinking an oil and filter chnage is mandatory after a severe overheat, anything else?

Ugh, now I am worried about the head gasket. The car is running fine, no temp troubles, no signs of coolant in the oil, but it looks like its burping out a bit of coolant through the cap. After it has been sitting a while, if I remove the cap, pressure is released and large-ish bubbles come blorping up into the expansion tank.

Don't want to remove the head. It only needs to last until next summer!

Min, I appreciate the suggestion, but it is her car unfortunately!

have you bled the air from the system ? It sounds like it keeps finding air pockets.

How did it lose the coolant in the first place?

Just bleed it again and drive it. Don't be removing the cap after you've bled it.... (that's like tearing off a scab to see if it's better yet)

Interesting idea, sky. . .I guess air in the system could expand and create enough pressure to cause the cap to release come coolant.

I'll bleed again and see where she's at.

If the engine heat boiled the coolant, it would have created air bubbles in the head. Just bleed it and drive it - these are pretty tough cars.
