|

So the other day i filled my gas tank up all the way which i don't normally do because it smells of gas when i do, and it was pointed out to me by a neighbor that my car was leaking gas. i looked and it was in a position so that it was on a slant with the tank slanting low. so i backed it up onto my driveway to see if it was just because i filled it up all the way and leaking from the top. it was and it stopped leaking. so then i tried to move it, started fine then chugged a bit while i tryed to give it gas but it just died before i could. this had also happened to me earlier that day but i gave it gas in time to keep it from stalling. but now my car won't start at all. the starter will not turn at all and the fuel pump at the back by the tank makes a funny noise which may just be the noise of it trying to pump gas like it should be. has anyone run into something like this before? is it just my starter or is it not running because of a problem with the fuel system?
thank you very much for help this is my only car i can drive

No that was the first thing i tried, cleaned the connections and everything its fine, fully charged. i disconnected the fuel pump and tryed carnking it to see if i could hear the starter but i did not. i'm going to jack the car up to test the starter solenoid tomorrow as it tells you to do in my haynes manual. but im still mystefied by why this would all happen at once (full tank, fuel leak, chugging, starter not working) _________________ 1987 924S - MO30 30/19 - Yellows all around |

Mate, please fix the gas leak first...
The tank straps can chafe trhough the tank I would start checking there. Dunno how you would fix it though, there are epoxy putty type patches but I would be looking for a replacement tank.... _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

yea i will take a look at my gas tank on Wednesday when i go back to school and can put it on the lift.
but for now i installed a new starter because i took the old one into Kragen auto parts and they tested it for me and the solenoid passed but the starter failed. so i installed the new one and still nothing, we tested the cables and everything and finally after trying to jump start the starter several times finally with the ignition in the on position it started. and kept starting all that day about 3 or 4 times but then later that night i had been at a friends house and was leaving when it repeated the same symptoms,
it started then sputtered as if it was starved for gas and died, then wouldnt start at all again like it had been. today i went to were my car was stuck, thankfully not far, and tested it tryed to get it running but couldnt so i took the starter out thinking maybe the new ones not working as it was a remanufactured one and took it back to Kragen to have it tested and it passed everything. then i took it back to my car and installed it and it worked
but im assuming there is something more going on here and that it will die eventually. but i will take it into my auto shop and see what my teacher has to say. _________________ 1987 924S - MO30 30/19 - Yellows all around |

If the fuel pump is making a funny noise, that might be your problem. I am noticing a whining noise from mine, and I think it might be ready to die. Check your fuel filter to see if it is clogged also - might explain why it sounds like it is straining.

yea i switched in my old dme to see if it would do anything but it didnt so i put the new one back in but i ended up taking the new starter back to kragen and they tested it and said it passed fine. then installed it back on the car and of course it worked, so i dont know very confusing.
and does my car have the in tank fuel filter along with the hp filter or just to hp filter? _________________ 1987 924S - MO30 30/19 - Yellows all around |

that doesn't sound fun. how many miles do you have on it?
I have seen guies at the track whose 944 wimped out on them. they replace the in fule tank pump and there power is restored. (yes they have two pumps just like 944's) but that doesn't explain why the starter isn't firing up. Unless there is a relay that desn't alow the starter to turn untill the fuel pump gets fuel to the engine.
It could be a relay. I Have a freind that picked up a 944 cheep that wouldn't start. poped a new computer in and still nothing. replaced a relay and it cam to life.
It has to be somthing to do with grounding or relay related I am thinking. As I recall a few times I turned the key to turn over the engine but it didn't quite fire and I tried to turn it again but nothing happend. I had to turn the key to the complete off position and than back on again to get the starter to turn again. The same thing when I stalled at a light on a hill. Have you been backing you key to off before trying to restart it affter it dies?
It could be that when you put the starter back in it worked because you had turned off the car and taken the key out and then put it back in and cranked it. That would have reset the relay.
hopfuly a new pump and understanding how the ignition works is all you need. best luck! _________________ Red 1987 924S with plans for D Productions Kit

i want to do the same exact thing with my 924S, d production, only one i found was gt racing, but i will try looking at the place you listed. _________________ 1987 924S - MO30 30/19 - Yellows all around |
