It's normal. Key in without turning either way enables power for the sound system.

Is there any way to keep power to the stereo so I don't lose all my settings everytime I turn the car off? I thought the fat red wire was supposed to be the non-switched power feed.

there should be two power wires. One is B+ (battery) for the memory and the other is switched for the radio function and power section. If it is a factory radio you may have a bad connection or cut wire.

If it is an aftermarket radio it was probably wired wrong. usually aftermarket radios have the wiring diagram attached to the body of the radio. Usually the radio will not turn on without the memory wire connected so there should be two wires connected to power then. If you take one and connect it to B+ and the radio does not turn on then you need to swap them.

for just a minute you got me scared when I read the title...

I always thought it was convenient and normal, but now I thought it could be a malfunction but it isn't

There is a switch in the ignition lock mechinism that is used for the radio. That is normal.

Loosing the memory when you turn off the car isn't.
