I was watching NHRA drag racing, funny cars and so on, and drooling over these cars, and was thinking back to the fastest thing(s) I've been in - it was either a Chevy Nova about 30 years ago or a 78 (I think) Porsche 930 - I wasn't driving either one.

Fastest thing I've driven is probably my own car. Pathetic but true.

Anyway, I think I'd really get a laugh from just the rush of a dragster. I've been in amusement parks and they're too tame. I'd like to go down the track in a 6 second car.

I'm not going to build one. But I wouldn't mind renting one for a couple of passes. lol Until then, I think the rush of the turbo kicking in is just a such freaking hoot that I haven't gotten tired of yet. It's also not so much of a hoot (like the way a 930 kicks in) that I think I'm going to lose the car next time it happens - again I haven't driven one but I've felt the effect in my ass and I doubt I'm skilled enough to thrash one about without wiping out.

Is that the hp or torque? Cause that's what I like.

Anyway, I was wondering, for you guys, what is it about our car that is a "HOOT" for you? Is it the handling, or where's the 'rush'? For racers is it always about the competition?

This is what makes my stomach get all fluttery:
    - Feeling the cool smoothness of the sleek, sexy lines beneath the chamois as I coax the classic sheet metal into shimmering hues of red, white, blue, and brown
    - Seeing a parking lot full of glistening gleaming Porsche glory, even if it's my own driveway
    - Watching heads turn when I roll by, even in the lowly NA
    - The deep threatening burble of my 928
    - The raw throaty snarl of my 941 accompanied by the harmonic whistling of the spooling K26
    - The earnest, optimistic revs of my NA
    - The pre-squeal soprano of tires hanging on for dear life through a set of twisties
    - The way traffic parts like the Red Sea before the SH4RK
    - The sweet pungent smell of the hot exhaust - tinged with the slightest trace of burnt oil - from a well-tuned toofah after a good hard run through the country
    - The faint, faded sweetness of 30 years of armorall and windex and turtle wax baked into the paint and vinyl of my cars

My "fastest car" experiences:
    - Fastest I've ever driven: 120 MPH in the 928 (ran out of straight)
    - Fastest car I've ever driven (top speed potential): my 928
    - Fastest car I've ever been in (1/4 mile time): my best friend's 1969 Mustang Mach I 428 Cobra Jet

From a while back...

I love the shape, they really appeal to me...
I actually like the quirky 80's-ness of the styling, long and low, with the vents and pop-up headlights.

I love the huge sunroof, very cool...

I love the feel of the interior. Feels like sitting in a jet fighter compared to most modern econo-boxes. The gear-lever sits just so, pedals are near-perfect. There's heaps of room for driver and passenger and it's comfortable, surprising for such a small car. Mine's a late model Turbo so it's got everything, leather interior, power windows, air-con, etc...

It's surprisingly practical. You can carry a whole lot of stuff in the back of one. Even a couple of kids

The handling is fantastic. Neutral, fool-proof. Grips like a cat on a rug

Mine being a Turbo, the performance is excellent. It goes like a cut snake... I love the whistle of the turbo as the boost builds, and the shove in the back when it kicks in

Pretty impressive...

And as for top speed...

Hmm... I think I love the feel of torque, the counter-intuitive feel of good handling in a strong turn (you expect it to slide, but it just sticks!), the sound of the engine as it accelerates up to ~60 and even after I guess, and the "old car" smell that seems to accompany these cars.

The fastest car I've driven... well, it's not mine but a 2006 Lotus Elise. The fastest I've ever actually gone? Hmm.... probably about 110-120. Honestly I can't remember the speed I actually reached in the Lotus, so I'm not sure if it was higher than that. However I've easily had my 924S up to the 110 range (some wonderful straight sections of lightly traveled highway around here) and it would've been happy to go even higher if I asked.

Turn ten at PIR. It's a fourth gear lefty coming off the back straight. You set up with your right side mirror inches from a concrete barrier, lift a bit, and cut across the curbing on the left. This is followed by an immediate right of similar radius which tosses you back out to the left, for hard braking and entry into 3rd gear T12. You then accelerate onto the front straight.

Its a beautiful combo, and the entry to ten is the key to it all. Ten sets the line for all three corners. Too hot, you'll make ten, but likely go off eleven. The back straight is actually a loooong right hand sweeper, and the fastest part of the track for my car, so lining up against the wall happens at the end of a 100+ MPH curve, redlined in 4th.

When you nail it right, its like a ballroom dance. That is, if you clenched your ass while ballroom dancing.

Honorable mention, Highway 53 into Nehalem Bay from Highway 26. 2nd gear, on boost swtichbacks, one after another. Heavy banking, maximum lateral Gs. I'd offer to guide a drive out there, but nobody would show up.

Second honorable mention: PIR in the rain, any corner when the boost comes on.

Third honorable mention: dicing with Khal in a pair of 3.0 CSLs at Nurburgring GP. Video soon.

Well being that I still have the 30 year old struts and shocks on my toofah, I can't really say it's the car that blows me away...yet. For me, it's getting on the on ramp to the interstate and seeing how well the car hugs the road as I smash the pedal to the floor as I make it to the straight road!
I've been in a Factory Five 427 Cobra (which is my next build) as a passenger and my buddy had it up to 145mph at a blink of an eye. Raw, nasty torque and power at your fingertips. F-ing sweet!!!

The fastest thing I've driven was my buddy's Z06 Corvette. Holy Shit!! That's all I can say. Six speed tranny. I got on the ramp to the interstate and let her rip. I was doing 135mph when I shifted into 4th gear and the car launched hard! I didn't even get into 6th gear, got too scared. I saw 160mph in 5th and had enough. Besides that, I would have definitely went to jail if the po-po had seen me. I'm in no way a Chevy man and would not ever own one, but damn that car was sick.

But I think the best feeling you get is when a car really makes you sink back in the seat when you're getting on it. That's when I smile the most.

Someday, ahhh someday... my toofah will see 160. (not!)

For me, it's got to be driving the 924 in "blind" tarmac rallies - approaching a blind crest at almost 200kph with nothing to suggest where the road goes on the other side, other than the direction of the powerlines. The feeling as your lifting off the ground at full speed when the next (close!) corner comes into view really gets the adrenalin going in a hurry!!

I guess the next best thing is hitting a gravel patch half way around a quick tight corner throwing you side ways, with a rock face on one side and a shear drop on the other.

I've been drag racing too (although never quicker than a 12 second car) and it doesn't even come close for me. Give me corners and hills any day!

The fastest I have ever gone was 142 or about. I was on my way to Fun Ford Weekend in my stang when I was forced to show a young one when to know there place......

Fastest 1/4 was a 11.49 @ 119mph, that was done in my 98 stang RIP

I have had much faster and better handling cars than the 924, but they were all purpose built. For its power and balance I do enjoy the Porsche it is still very civil @ it's limit, and at the end of the day I'm going home in a Porsche....

That last part just doesnt have the same effect when talking about other cars...

PS. I have had my 924 up to 115 @ night when no one is around

I love a little bit of everything. Drag racing is fun, it's nice to set personal bests and improve your driving. Twisties are also great fun too. Looking to try some rallyx here soon in my Audi, I can't wait for that.

Fastest i've ever been: 130mph in my 924S
Fastest car i've driven (1/4 mile): mid 13's in my turbo escort
Fastest car I've ridden in: 11 second supercharged mustang

Oh yeah,

I had my 74 Camaro up to an indicated 135 (not likely), my 79 RX7 up to 125, and have had Shaggy in the 120+ area at the track (front straight, no chicane).

Hm... acceleration that throws me to the back of my seat, and keep me there till 135 mph. That would be nice...if my 924 could do that.

my chuckle kicks in when the boost kicks in 3/4 of the way through a fast corner. nothing quite like the rush of power, while hoping your at and not past the limits of adhesion...

Ive had a few very fast cars. In my old Ford Torino gt I once raced a then new Vette over the Robert moses bridges in NY, well over 100mph, on a high bridge, in a car that handled like a boat, Vette guy backed off early, got scared(or smart!,) fun times (dumb times too!) Id routinely do mid 13's(very quick then!) in street races in my 72 ford maverick (hp302 with the works!), also a car that would do 140 mph and not even break a sweat. But the most fun was probably my old little oldsmobile firenza gt, i drove it like a hot wheels car during a blizzard, bouncing from side to side off the snow plow made banks up the new jersey turnpike doing well over 80 mph...i have pictures someplace, the entire front end was encased in a block of ice, looked like a bug in the middle of an ice cube after that trip..

So while pure speed can be allot of fun, ive had more fun at and past the limits of adhesion, ill take handling over power, having a fair amount of both is the ideal for me..
