I have a small oil leak from the dipstick , so I flushed the breather with degreaser. I guess its now unclogged
because it now blows out air??
Ive also disconnected the other hose to the charcoal canister

Question - Should the crankcase breather be blowing out or sucking in air?

thanks

Charcoal canister?
Is yours an oz car or an import?

The crankcase will blow out air.

thanks ozzie

Mine has a canister in the passenger side front wheel arch.

My 924 has service history going back to 1977 and documentation that is was bought in Sydney, therefore assume
its an Australian delivered.

Does the canister suggest otherwise?

Took it for a spin and got an immediate increase in responsiveness. Not just a little...quite a bit!!
And....now my tacho works properly...( needle now goes beyond 3000).
And this from only just a few squirts of degreaser( and left overnight) into the crankcase breather

explanation...?

what does the tacho run off?

Ozzie,

I'm surprised that they allowed your car to be registered in Aus without a charcoal canister. ADR27A which became law in mid-1976 was the emissions ADR and required all cars after that date to have a canister. Perhaps emissions are like red lights in the Sunshine State - optional

Pretty sure you'll find it doesn't run off the crankcase breather...!! I think you've hit upon one of the wonders of working on old cars - "stuff happens"

Mine HAD a canister in LH wheel arch originally too. Thought they were fitted to all Au cars, early and late. Qld and SA don`t have any annual inspection like NSW or Vic.

The breather should not be blowing out much air at all if the piston rings are good. Air? coming out indicates leakage (blow by) of the rings.

The tacho runs from ignition pulses from the coil - via a green wire. Direct from the coil on points dizzys or the TIU connection that also connects to the coil - on VR (later) dizzy. Wires run along firewall behind the breather so you most likely inadvertently bridged a poor connection or broken wire. Gotta have some luck sometimes. So if it starts playing up again you know where to look first. Or maybe it never revved past 3K with a choked breather.

Can you outline the procedure you used as I was thinking about doing mine the difficult way but I may try this first.

Thanks

what would be the best option if you unplug the breather from the canister/intake manifold?
I've got TB's now so I can't hook the breather to my inlet (and I wouldn't want to)...

Let it hang loose in the engine bay could give a mess....I've seen filters put on the breather to filter any sucked in air...how essential would this be?

I'm surprised your cleaning made such a difference! how bad was the filth?

if your crankcase can't breathe the airpressure in the engine will rise (you wouldn't believe how much gas leaks past the piston rings) causing more resistance for the engine...

My car was originally reg'd in NSW and Vic and then I bought it.
No canister but it may be the UK thing.

I connected my breather to the air box and plugged the join. Immediate change to the response of the motor.

I unplugged the breather and changed the hose awhile back.
I had oil leaks from the crank seal, the fill cap and probably the rear seal too before this.

Does anyone know if you can get the breather off the side of the block with the engine still in the car?
It seems to be shrouded by the engine mount bracket. I think my breather may be blocked.

Also are there more than one type? Mine seems to have the pipe in the middle but I have seen some with it canted over at the top.

Cheers
Simon
