I had a look under the dash ( at great risk to my back and other body parts) and unfortunately as was suggested in a previous post I cannot see the mounting screw for the switch. It appears to be inside the steering column housing. The switch face sits flush with the housing.
So I guess it's off with the wheel and go in through the front. Haynes is reasonably clear on the sequence to take it apart.
I'm assuming once the lock nut is undone it's going to be a hard pull to get the wheel off the shaft. Will I need a puller ?
Now for the dumb question... The horn pad. How do I get it off ? Is it a straight pull or a twist or what. Since it's plastic and it's old I don't want to yank on it and have it break.
So far this job has cost only $4.40 and I'd like to keep it that way. Suggestions please.

The horn pad pulls off. Super easy, just grab it and yank.
My wheel didn't need a puller, or at least I don't think it did. It was a while ago -- I know other wheels I've taken off have needed them. Just borrow-a-tool from Crappy Tire if it doesn't come off easily. _________________ 78 924 NA

* when removing the standard wheel- loosen off the nut but do not remove.
Yank on the wheel until it comes loose.
Remove nut and wheel.
This way you dont remove your front teeth. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

The photo essay was very informative. I now know what things look like in there. And I'll be sure to keep the nut on until the wheel actually comes loose. Not looking forward to this job but it's what needs to be done.
I do wonder though if the covers were off could I see into the switch housing to get at the screw from behind ? Just a thought.....

. . .except the early setup is far more of a pain in the ass. Go under the dash and unplug the harnesses for the stalk switches before trying to pull the stalk switches out. Prepare for the stalk switches to be brittle and crappy, in need of replacement. _________________ Toofah King Bad
