My car had a new tank fitted just before i bought it but i think i'm still suffering from the legacy of the old one.(both pumps bad, fuel filter under bonnet almost completely blocked),but i'm still not getting much fuel out of the distributor head.I've removed it and need a general guide on what to look out for and how to strip/clean it out please?

You can remove the distributor from the plenum, pull the piston and relief valve, then spray brake or throttle body cleaner through all the passages. Also, the cylinder wall for the control pressure piston needs to be cleaned but be careful to not scratch it. When reassembling check the o ring(s) on the relief valve to insure there are no cuts or abrasions.

Thanks,

It's now nice and clean, back together but one problem.....

I lost the shim that sits behind the spring in the pressure regulating valve!

Does anyone know what size this shim should be? - i'd rather make one than buy the kit for £75!!

The sizes (thickness) varies based upon the calibration of the system pressure. You really need to find the old washer/spacer.

Thanks Dennis, not what i wanted to hear, but i'll continue the search.I think this unit has been off before - should there be a return spring under the control plunger? (could be part of my problem)

No return spring under the plunger. It works on control pressure from the top and is countered by the movement of the air sensor plate.

Thanks Dennis, the reason i ask is because i've just read a clean up guide and the unit shown had one fitted - very similar but not quite the same as ours (think it was from a ford).I'm still learning
