Hey is there any special or better kind of bearing grease to use on the rear and front bearings (drum disk setup)? I just thought the cheap stuff from NAPA but if there's better out there I'll use it. _________________ 1980 924 turbo, MSD, Meth. Inj, otherwise stock. |

I do prefer synthetic; specifically, I've been most happy with Valvoline synthetic. Mobil 1's nice, but doesn't work in CV's, wheras the Valvoline does - allows me to only stock the one grease. Most important is to get 'em adjusted just right... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Well thanks I got the grease and the front bearings and brakes went along just fine except for the front calipers stuck a bit. I got a machine shop to set the bearing races properly at the front in the disc.
Now for the back.
I couldn't find the rear bearings install section in Haynes and it's in the car now so I can't check it (the car is stored a few blocks away since my rear window was busted). But a mechanic who looked it over said it required a special tool.
I don't recall it needing a special tool. I have the rear drum setup - Is this guy full of it? Can I do this myself if I set aside a day? Am I going to need a bearing puller? _________________ 1980 924 turbo, MSD, Meth. Inj, otherwise stock. |

There is a special VW tool for undoing the hub nut but a big bar and a 36mm socket will do that. You will also need to undo the driveshaft bolts so a 12 spline/tri-square will be needed unless they have been upgraded to allen bolts ( ) outer bearing is retained by a bolted on collar that holds the drum backing plate on inner bearign is retained wuth a big circlip, they just then slide out. Its a significant and messy job...
