Hello everyone,
For some time now I have had a click come from the rear end of my 87 924S. Sometimes I can drive around at length with no trouble but most of the time it starts up pretty much as soon as i begin driving. The clicking increases with speed of the wheels not the speed of the engine and can be louder with more throttle or quieter with less throttle. I thought perhaps it was a CV joint so I took the right rear axle apart (the sound seems to come from the right side) but the boot was fine and full of grease and none of the parts show significant wear. I have so far only had time to look at the right side but I want to look more this weekend. I'm pretty much learning as I go so other than check the other cv joint I'm out of ideas. If anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful.

I would have flipped the cv on re-installation (re-installed with the previously-outboard end now at the transmission, and the previously-inboard end at the wheel). If you didn't happen to do that, don't worry about it for now. -But if you have the other side removed, you might do it there.
Another way to get a clue about whether it's a cv problem is to drive and listen while going straight, then putting it into a good wide sweeping turn (enough to throw the weight of the rear to one side, but obviously not so much as to roll or fishtail it (and do it in a large deserted parking lot)). This should shift the driveshafts ("half-shafts") to one side and cause the ball bearings inside the CVs to ride a bit outside of their normal paths. If the sound disappears while doing this, you might conclude it's a CV problem.
It can also be a wheel bearing problem, and my own car had this about 15 years ago. I found one of the bearing races had a groove straight across that seemed to be pounded into it. I'm guessing that may have happened on hitting something like a major pothole.
The sound was just as you describe for yor problem. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."
