So I was driving the 924 around today and parked it while I ate at a restaurant. I came back out, barely even pushed the clutch down, and I hear a very loud bash, and my foot going down the the floor. The cable snapped. I'm not 100% sure it was the cable, could have been a bolt or something, but from what I could tell under there, it mustv'e been the cable. I don't know why it just randomly had to snap out of nowhere, but what the hell.

In any case I got it toed, but the people won't be able to even look at anything until Monday. I was just wondering what something like this is going to cost?

Don,t know how much it would cost to install never had any one work on any of my cars. Would be an easy thing to do yourself, the cables are cheap!

theres a good chance its not the cable, but rather the cable ends, which are plastic, and unfortunately, no longer available. the ends simply slide over a hook/notch type end on top of the clutch pedal arm, and over the lever on top of the bell housing. if were still available it would be a $2.00 part. i have a bad one as well, and have to fab one up, just havent gotten around to it yet...

The other possibility is that the cable slipped off of the bracket. It will behave, feel, and sound just like a broken cable. What can happen is that the bottom side nut may loosen up allowing the cable to slip off. The other possibility is that one or both of the foam washers (one on top, one on bottom) can disintegrate over time, which basically has the same effect as the nut coming loose, allowing the cable to slip off of the bracket.

In short, your cable could be fine. Get under the hood with a flash light and try to determine if it's just slipped off of the bracket.

If the cable is snapped, I just replaced the one in my 81 NA. The only thing wrong with it was the bottom foam washer went AWOL. You'll have to figure something out for that in order to properly install and adjust it (cut one out of some foam from a fabric store?), but it might help you out of a jam until you can source a new one. Let me know if you need it.

Well I had it towed to the shop, so if they will look it at and can determine what is wrong with it, I should know Monday. I don't want to be that long without it.

This has actually turned out to be a good thing. I now know how big of a pain it can be to have something go wrong with the car you love, so I'm a lot more motivated to learn the hell out of the car so that I have more knowledge about it if something else happens to it, and that I might be able to fix it myself rather than paying a closetful of money to have someone else do it. I think I was lucky enough to have someone actually even look at a foreign car. Most people won't touch them.

In any case they called me up telling me theyhad to order a few different parts. I didn't have time to go into any questions, but I'm headed off to Arizona this Saturday so when I get back I'll have to make up for lost time.

great to hear the motivation to learn about the car.

this is a problem which can be looked at by just popping the hood, but you have to know where to look and what to see

A friend of mine got a motor bike from a bike shop because his was in for maintanance... after a few km the bike stalled and he pushed it the whole way back to the shop, where they told him the petcock/fuel tap was closed

most of the problems during driving can be easily solved and in my opinion, if you want to drive a car, ride a bike or fly a plane, you should know how the stuff works. Not just how to control the machine, but know how the machine works.

If you don't, you're not worthy sounds harsh... but it would make the world a better place
Same thing with computers. I don't know shit about them, but I try to learn as much as possible to be able to solve any problems I encounter.

Apparently it was the clutch cable endings. They broke off, and since the pieces are not made anymore, they are going to manufacture some, make them out of steel so they will not pop again. I'll let you guys know how it turns out, Tuesday when I get more information on the status.

I have no clue. I'm sure they are going to charge quite a bit for these.
