|
|
Hey there -- just purchased a 1979 924. $800 and runs pretty well - needs the electric fan fixed. I know I will be asking a lot of questions as I work her over.
Here's my first one. After I go over the engine and tranny well my big job is repainting the car. The original color was a tan and it's been overpainted black. I like the black and will repaint it that color. On a black 924 what color is the window trim? Is it chrome or black? If black is it the same shine as the car body or satin?
Thanks in advance for the help you can give to me.

welcome aboard!
whats wrong with your tranny?
chances are its not the fan thats broken but rather the wiring or switch that controls the fan.... apply 12 volts across the fan to see if its running
colour wise..its personal preference...ide go satin on the trim..but be careful...if the cars being painted for the 3rd time (that you know of) theres a good chance the paint will be soo thick that itll just crack off...ie sand down a few layers or chemical/mechanical strip _________________ 1979 NA

Oh before the repaint it's going down to base metal. I have a couple of rust through spots to fix and a few dings to level out too.
Nothing wrong with the tranny that I know. Shift linkage is a little loose tho.
As for the electric fan it's the wiring or fuse or relay or motor or sensor. I just need to isolate and fix. I look forward to having fun with this one.

easy
fan- apply 12 volts and see if it spins
fuse- try a different fuse
thermo switch- hot water test
relay- try a new one
wiring- isolate the fan sytem in haynes...then follow the wires check grounds..look for shorts....check for burnt pins on the back of the relay box
Stay away from the tranny....you never know what youll pick up! _________________ 1979 NA

On the rust spots I would zinc coat them after sanding. Prime and paint over it all. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Vince, how does one go about DIY zinc coating? I was always under the impression this involved acid dipping, neutralizing, rinsing, and then dipping in molten zinc... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

yeah thats the proper zinc coating..ie galvanising nothing beats it
There are zinc in a can options..ie paint with high levels of zinc

Well the rust is a little more than that in two spots.
I have a quarter sized hole on the corner under the headlight and a 1x4 inch hole on a front fender. Looks like I spend some time with my MIG welder. Other rust areas I'm taking down to bare metal and looking.
As for the tranny - It did shift fine. I'm still getting used to the funny shift pattern.

Go to a auto paint shop and ask for zinc coating. It is a clear liquid. You could apply it to bare metal a couple of times let it dry in between applications. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"
