I am looking at a 1977 1/2 924 that has been sitting for about 8 years. The car was given to the current owner and it was towed to the current site. They think that the water pump was changed and then it sat in a shop for about a year. It engine would crank but not turn over. I would like to hook up a good battery and see if it will even crank.
What would be the best method to prevent any further damage when trying to crank the engine? What other things should I be wary of the car? The owners boyfriend wants to just get rid of it and is asking $800. I think that is pretty high for a car with a lot of unknown problems.
It would be a fun project but I would not want to start with a vehicle that won't be on the road for who knows how long.
Thanks for any words of wisdom. |

Remove the gas cap and smell the gas, if it smells like varnish, don't even try to start it.
Try turning the crank by hand, if it doesn't budge, don't even try to start it.
Remove the valve cover, if the cam and lifters are covered with corrosion, don't even try to start it. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

WORDS OF WISDOM FOR THE DAY:
Find a better example. There's plenty to be had.

Many of us have brought 924's back to life after they sat for many years, but it is a project. determining the extent of the issues is the key to figuring out if its worth it or not.
Besides the non running issue, how is the rest of the car? Is the exhaust system held on by rust? is the interior falling apart from mold and humidity? it could be a jewel in the rough, or it could be ready for the recycler.
These cars are not difficult to revive, but it does take a certain amount of dedication and drive, and they are a losing proposition financially. The price on your candidate is also very high. If the car is in decent condition and just doesn't run, I probably wouldn't go more than $400. If it has other issues as well, I'd cut that offer in half again if I was absolutely sure I wanted a project and realistically thought i could save it. If the answer is "no" to any of these, Id walk away...
There is a CD link in my sig that shows what I've encountered so far in bringing my 78 back to life, that may give you an idea of what you could be in store for if you decide to buy the car your looking at. _________________ Eric

924guy is spot on with the price. I picked up mine for 500 in non running condition.
Mine has sat for atleast 8 years, and trust me there are alot of stuff you need to replace. I have so far replaced EVERYTHING mechanical because it randomly failed on me in the month i got it working. The only thing that i havent replaced yet is the egnine, and the starter!
Electrics would need refreshening. 8 years of sitting causes alot of corrosion and oxidization on ground terminals, relays and fuses. Nothing worked on my car except for the headlight motor.
Then again, that was my car. It was sitting outside in the elements for a loooong time. The one you are looking at could be better than mine... or worse.
So unless you enjoy working on cars, id stay away from it and get something in running condition... or something that hasnt been sitting for a while. They dont go for much anyways... around 1k-3k depending on how well kept the car is. Trust me, you will put more in the car to get it running, and you still havent tackled the cosmetics yet.
IF you end up getting this car, make sure you test out electrics when you hook up the battery and use anything that doesnt work as an excuse to knock down the price
Good Luck
