Hey guys,

Im about to install the rear CGT flares. Only snag i ran into is cutting the rear arches. Can someone tell me how to go about this? I saw Hugo's diy but i have zero welding skills...

sweet, thanks for the links Dan. So if i understood this correctly, the outer wall and inner well are close together when cut at 3" from the top. So i can weld them together at that point without the whole folding/bending stuff... But i have never welded before... Would JB weld work?

If you cut carefully and neatly, you could then use Flexible Edge Repair Panels like these...

...to avoid having to make your own folds, and then you could simply pop rivet these into place. I still haven't ruled out this approach on my car, but I may have to go another route because the PO butchered the OEM metal so badly, the gaps are probably too big for these strips. You would need to of these strips per side.

Cut 3 inches and then weld them together and what I did was I FG the inside in case I missed some openings. Weld it, you don't want to make the body flex.

I used a reciprocating saw and welded the gaps shut. Take a sawzall to the side of a perfect condition original porsche with 74K miles on it??... spooky

yes, it is like operating on your son. You keep repeating "what did I do, what did I do" until you finish painting it.

Hey havent thought about that... crappy tire wanted well over 500 for a Mig... Ill check em out tomorrow morning.

TIG, MIG, or stick is the question though. I dunno which to choose, and which is better for a beginner.

I don't think you want to learn how to weld on the body of your car. Sheet metal can be tough to weld for a beginner. Mistakes mean big holes in the metal where your fender used to be.

I bought my self-shielding wire-feed MIG from HF for right about $100. No gas. No muss. No fuss.

Make sure the metal is clean (grind then wipe with prep-sol or acetone) Clamp the two parts together then put spot-welds 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 of the way around, then split the difference between your original spots and keep doing this until you've filled in all the way around. Takes a while but it can work for a beginner. Grind down the bumps to smooth everything out and you're done.

For a beginner, the easiest way to weld is with a oxygen acetylene torch. IMO anyways, it puddles really easily, and welds sheet metal very nicely, no splatter cleanup, no monkeying around, just a small tip and some tig wire.
