Today I rec'd a letter from the B.C. Govt run insurance people (ICBC). They granted me a collector plate for the '78- 924 I've had for over 20 years.

It took most of the summer to get the car to the point were it looked reasonable.
It's not exceptional by any means. Still has 20+ yr old paint and original interior with the exception of cloth seats for the driver and passenger to sit on. The seat backs are still original. The radio wasn't vintage and had to go. Made a filler plate for the center console.

Of course being a 924 it had 2 brake failures while I was getting it ready and that took a bit of time.

So the plates will arrive in a week, just in time to put it in winter storage again.....darn !!!

Hey, that's interesting. So, do they actually inspect the car? Or do you just sorta "promise" that it's all how it should be? Like, what they don't know never hurt 'em, eh?

But I did always wonder if they actually had someone inspect the car for collector 'plates up here. I've just never got around to finding out and don't know anyone who's actually done it.

Slightly OT: The second generation 944's ('85.5) become "collectible" this year, I think..?

They have a list of glossy photographs you must submit. Several you see above. Engine compartment, trunk, drivers seat and carpet. passenger area, centre console and radio in detail, car front, back & both sides.

All must be correct vintage and no custom stuff. The criteria as I understand it is the car should be factory but some minor wear is allowed to show. I had to remove the air dam and find a stock valance.

You must also provide the lic # of the car you own that is not collector status.

They have all the factory info and compare your pics to factory specs. It's a pain but I went to the trouble.

Congratulations. Certainly looks like a worthy specimen for collector plates.

Well except for the rear panel but the Govt doesn`t know its aftermarket. FWIW I don`t mind them anyway.

The rear panel is OK because it's the correct vintage. I worried about that all summer and almost took it off. I hesitated because I didn't know what color was behind it. Glad I did now.

My insurance on the car will drop from $604.00 CDN per year to a lowly $207.00 cdn a year for the same coverage. This does not include collision insurance to repair my car if I'm responsible for an accident. But does cover 2 milion liability on my part.

It does cover comprehesive damage i.e. broken glass, windshield and rear hatch and misc. damage including being hit by a deer.

It's worthwhile over the long term to get a collector designation if possible.

Yeah that's what they do.

I've no idea on deer hit stats but from what I see on the highways outside of Vancouver it's very high numbers. When you see highway signs that say "Caution High Deer Kill Area" you need to carry comprehesive insurance.

I'm glad it won't be that hard to Get Special interest plates where i am, they bassically go is the car 30 YO... ok here you go, andit reduces your rego and insurance.

You can then only drive it 50 times a year, and have to fill out a log book.

That's much easier....BUT a log book and 50 times a year. That's a royal pain. Usually by the time they reach 30 YO someone has taken reasonable care of it.

My only restriction is not to be driven to work or school or for business. Pleasure only. No other limits.

It's never been a DD so doesn't affect me. In a big year I might put on 3000 miles. Normally I don't take it far enough to need an oil change, but we do it anyway in the fall.
