It just conked out after filling up at a servo. (Either starter - which it really shouldn't be since it was changed about 200km ago - or something fiddly and electrical, haven't had a thorough look yet.) It just happened when i needed to do a few things and in public was a little embarrassing. With my partner still not having a backup car. I've just decided i'm ready to call it and move on. _________________ 77 NA 924

Given all of your problems, including the recent one, on the surface it sounds like you shouldn't be an owner of an older car, especially one being used as your primary, if you're unable to deal with the occasional "burp" without freaking out.
Sorry to see you go, but we'll be here if/when you come back.
(Honestly, if you freak out over things like this, you'll never truly enjoy owning an older car. You'll find that you're worried all the time that it will fail. Those that typically do enjoy older cars, view the occasional failure as merely a temporary set back. Once the initial frustration passes, the sleeves get rolled up and we begin to troubleshoot the problem objectively then determine the next step to resolution of the problem. We also typically have a road services membership to ensure we and the car will make it home) _________________ Stefan

With all due respect Fiat, i don't know if you quite grasp the differences between owning an old Porsche in a place like Australia and doing likewise in a place like America or the UK where parts, services etc are a lot more plentiful and a lot less expensive. It has little to do with "owning an older car" as i've never owned a newer car and my only vehicle for about 6 or 7 years was a 1977 Celica which rarely skipped a beat and the few occasions when it did it was comparatively straightforward to repair. In my experience thus far the 924 and indeed most other P-cars seem to be in a league of their own.
Also... i hardly think i'm "freaking out" over trivial things. I bought the car as a bit of a gift to myself knowing full well that an older car would have its inherent issues. In the coming may, i will have owned the car for 2 years. In that time it's been mobile for less than 6 months so i hardly feel as though i'm giving up at the first sign of trouble. Obviously there are other factors in my disappointment such as my partner taking a little longer than expected to get herself her own car and i will also be the first to admit that i probably underestimated the unique difficulties with this particular car. I do enjoy older cars and i don't mind a bit of work but i think there have been a few extenuating circumstances. In any case, i purchased the car to enjoy and in truth, the driving and the occasional challenge ceased being fun some time ago.
As i mentioned, i will be forever grateful to the members here and the support they have offered both physical and moral. I will hopefully continue to visit the forums and one day with a little more experience and a more carefully chosen vehicle i may return. _________________ 77 NA 924

I used 924's as my only means of transport for six years and it certainly makes running them that little bit more difficult. I was always concerned that I'd start working on something, break it and then not be able to get a simple part to get it back together.
Just getting replacement self locking nuts for the front suspension has proved to be difficult. Took them into a 'nut and bolt' shop and they contacted two Aussie nut manufacturers and nobody in Australia 'makes this nut with this thread.'. Sure they can be ordered via a Porsche parts mob however you'd think a nut wouldn't be that difficult....
I have found that sometimes it is easier to take the more difficult problems to a specialist Porsche mechanic and just get it sorted however you can't think too hard about the over capatilisation... |

Bump.
Still quite motivated to get rid of this 924. Planning on moving house beginning of next year and i don't fancy taking this with me in the moving truck. Also, i would really like to free up a little cash flow to pay off some things.
Guys, as far as i know, all it needs is a new starter, could be worth a bit more in the hands of someone who better knows their way around these cars.
Any interest at all, please contact me.
