The tank couldn't even make it all the way over. What a waste of some good body panels... not to mention the euro driving lights.

I'm pretty sure that was a Saratoga top in the sunroof.

Poor sods didn't know how much money they just crushed.

I thought it looked too small to be a Saratoga top. I hope it was just one of those cheap common pop up glass tops.

Thing is though, no one wants them here unless they are a runner (they are old, expensive to Tax and insure, poor economy compared to modern cars what with the price of fuel, plus you got to get them through an MOT test too) so, it would only go in the crusher at the scrap yard, or fetch £300 on eBay...(probably worth more as scrap steel).... unless you want to export it to the US that is.

It's only the mechanically perverse that are interested in these cars in the UK

This thread reminds me of how Clarkson always upsets the Morris Marena's owners club by dropping a grand piano on said car.

Some thoughts on the same subject four months earlier in the ‘Laugh of the Day’ thread:

+1^ The Saratoga is wider (Targa width). An aftermarket sunroof is pretty common in Euroland since Targa was an option. In the late 80's 2nd+ Toofah drivers would put them pop-ups in as a cheap solution to obtain a hint of luxury.

Regards, Harm.

With respect, we do not know why this car became scrap and what catogory it was given. When a car has been declared "written off" by an insurance company it is given a category. The insurance company can only recover their money by selling the vehicle in accordance with the given category.

Category A
A vehicle which should be totally crushed, including all its spare parts, either due to death of driver/passenger or if the vehicle has been "written off" previously and then repaired and returned to the road.

Category B
A vehicle from which spare parts may be salvaged, but the bodyshell should be crushed and the car should never return to the road.

Category C
An extensively damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.

Category D
A slightly damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.

Category F
A vehicle damaged by fire, which the insurer has decided not to repair.

Therefore; If this 924 had been involved in an accident 10 years ago and was declared a Category D write off. The insurance company would have paid out (to the 924 owner) the then current market value.
The insurance company will then try to recover their money so they will sell the car to a vehicle recycler. The vehicle recycler can then part the car out in accordance with the give category, (in this case Category D). As there are plenty of amateur and professional mechanics who could use second hand parts to repair this vehicle at a much lower price than the list costs for parts and labour that insurance company would have quoted for.., so some punter could come along, buy the car, repair it, re-register it, re insure it and then drive it on the road.

Ok, so lets say this new owner/driver enjoys his 924 for another 9 years until one day it gets stolen, so he makes a claim. One week later the police find the car, 600 mile away. The insurance company would have to recover the car, probably get a quote for a new ignition lock, door lock, steering column at the list costs for parts and labour and then realise that new Porsche parts are not cheap and will cost more than the car is worth to repair. They will therefore "write it off" and because it has been given a Category D previously, this time it will get a Category A. The owner will get market value and the insurance company will get the CRUSHED scrap value unless they can add value to it by, (for-instance) selling it to TANKS-A-LOT who will CRUSH and scrap it and charge some punter that wants to "drive a tank over a Porsche" and will pay £400 for the privilege
http://www.tanks-alot.co.uk/galleries/crush-a-car/
Previous owner gets his cash,
Insurance get their cash,
TANKS-A-LOT get their cash,

Meanwhile, a bunch of guys in the US wet themselves because they do not like the UK Governments Ministry of Transport's rules. But neither do we but you can't change them, cos they want you to buy new economic cars and get all the old stuff of the road! So we just find a way of enjoying that process that also generates jobs and business!

Yes its criminal, but so is the Governments car scrap-age system. They give you £2000 off a new car in exchange for CRUSHING yours
Remember this thread My 924 is Worth More than Triple if I Scrap it
