Last Friday I drove from Maryland to Boston to see my dad. I took my '99 Chevy 2500 P/U truck since I was stopping at Nein37's house in Connecticut to pick up some wheels. John and I had a nice visit while I loaded the wheels and admired his CGT mods. Then on to my pop's house.
Left Sunday morning and stopped again in the middle of CT to inspect a 356 Porsche. Around 1:00 PM I got as far as Danbury, CT and the truck burped a couple times, tach dropped to zero and I coasted to side of the Interstate. I banged on the wiring, computer and ignition module for a while and after about 20 tries in 45 minutes, it restarted.
It ran fine for another couple hundred miles then happened again in the middle of PA. OBTW, it was windy/rainy and I was in the middle of another East Coast flood/storm. Tach dropped to zero and I dead sticked down an exit ramp to a stop light at a small town. I blocked traffic for about 45 minutes while I found a local towing company (9:00 PM on a rainy Sunday night!) who came out to tow me to the local garage. As we were getting ready to load the truck onto his flatbed, it restarted! GRRR.
The tow truck driver said that he wouldn't be able to have anyone look at it until the next day. I thought about it for a while, paid him for his call out and decided to press on.
Trying to cover my bases and about 90 miles from home, I called and asked my son to jump in the wife's mini-van and head north to meet up with me. My son stopped in Baltimore, MD and I met him in a fast food parking lot. The truck died as I pulled into the lot. GRRRR
Forty five minutes later, it restarted and we took off for the last 40 miles. Then 10 miles later it died. So we stopped along the road and waited. Again after about 45 minutes, the truck restarted. Off we went, only to die again in two miles. GRRRRRRR So close.
After anouther long wait without it restarting, I decided to look for another towing company (yeah, right at 1:00 AM in a pouring rainstorm). Through the magic of AT&T and Apple's iPhone I found another towing company who would come pick up the truck and tow it to a friend's repair shop about 5 miles away.
I paid for the tow, loaded my luggage and the wheels into the mini-van and my son and I drove home arriving at 2:00 AM. Sixteen hours to complete a 7 hour trip.
Did I tell you how many state troopers, police cars or sheriffs stopped to offer assistance? While I saw many pass me by at multiple locations, the only one that stopped was when the last tow truck arrived. GRRRRR.
My buddy called yesterday and said the truck was throwing codes for the crank sensor. He put a new on on and I'm off tonight to gather up the Chevy.
For over 40 years of long distance driving, none of my German cars have left me stranded. I've managed to make enough roadside repairs to at worst, limp home. Not so the American iron. GRRRRRRR

Well be happy to live in the US, here in germany you see a cop once within a month...

As i worked in south carolina at the BMW Plant i decided one morning not to use the car and so i walked away from the Hotel. After 1 mile a cop stopedm close to me and asked me if my car broke down...I said no iam just walking.. he replied, get in the car i drive you where you want to..

i felt a little bit like john Rambo...
