This is probably a really dumb question, but I'm asking so I don't go looking for something that might not be broken. Just wondering, when you turn your 924's ignition on but before you start it, do the brake warning lamps in the centre console light up?

The reason I ask is because they don't on mine, but I can't figure out the Haynes diagram to understand that they even would.

In fact, I'm wondering if I've got a bit of a bastard car. The wiring seems to mostly match the 1980 diagram, but there are few spots it matches the '82 diagram. Notable differences so far: there's no oxygen sensor, there's a sensor in the brake booster tank, the inside fan has three settings.

Wade, you probably got a pommy car...chances are it's got its own features. The lights for the instuments should come on with the key. RC and 9xxxBird seem to be the resident electronics gurus...luckilly they are both right hand drive....

What about smoothie too? He is sparkful

I'll look into this and get back as i don't know off hand but you can check by taking the lid off your brake reservoir and see if the red light comes on.
The ignition check is done before starting as a bulb check an i think it is done by the electronics in the square red light cluster on the center console. This also does the seatbelt warning on some cars as well as the handbrake check.

There is also a handbrake check on the round gauge cluster in the pod behinds the steering wheel. This is operated by the VW switch on the hand brake.

And it was an idiotically simple thing: the plug had come off the lights in the console.
