STUTTGART Apr 1 - Porsche today announced the return of the venerable 924 model, newly-christened the "948" to the Porsche lineup. "We are very proud to bring back the 924 as a 2 cylinder, 2 stroke air-cooled model, much like Renault's 2CV from the 50's and 60's" said Ferdinand Peaches, 2nd cousin twice removed of Porsche's founding father, Ferdinand Porsche. "It will be twice the fun with half the cylinders" said Peaches, "whilst returning the much maligned 924 to our air-cooled roots."
The 911 crowd immediately disavowed any direct lineage to the 948, stating "the 948 isn't a *real* air-cooled car. "If that's what they wanted to build" one 911 purist was purported to say, "they should have taken their design from the Saab 80 or Craftsman weed-wacker, like any decent two-stroke."
944 owners immediately held forth hope for a new "988" model, and a larger considerably more complex, but still 2 cylinder two-stroke that would destroy itself when the drive belt broke. "We can't wait" they were heard mumbling. "A new 988 turbo" Peaches said, "Was out of the question, unfortunately, because Peugot owns the rights to model numbers "1002" and "1026"", the next obvious step for the current 951 and 968.
Reaction from 924 owners was universal. "Haw, Happy April Fools day friends. Made ya look!!" |
