|
|
After removing the in-tank pump to replace the rubber gasket, I noticed some debris around the filter. It wasn't rust or anything like that, but seemed to be like foam or sponge type stuff. I once saw inside a fuel cell where there was the foam type thing to keep the gas from sloshing all around. This seemed similar. Any idea where this would be from? Does the gas tank have foam to help gas not slosh around? I am thinking that may be part of my problem with the line "plugging up" when driving/turning.

Here are some pictures of the "foam" or whatever it is.

I know I changed out the tank on a 1980 931 with the intank pump and there was definetly no foam in it (just rust!).

I found that exact stuff you're showing when I removed my in-tank pump a few years ago. Interesting, but due to the shape and composition of the particles, I don't think it would be clogging anything - it wasn't in my case. -And it's definitely too large to get through the fine mesh screen of the in-tank pump. I'm guessing it was an outer filter that originally covered the intake of the in-tank pump, but's long since fallen apart. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. I was able to get a little more out by flushing and rocking the car to make the crap suspended in the gas. There seemed to be a lot of that stuff and all broken up into little chunks. I also found a foil seal thing - the type on fuel antifreeze, fuel line cleaner, etc., but I know I didn't put that in there. Maybe I'll find money next time!!! Once I fix the fuel distributor tubing (another thread), then I can see if this made a difference. _________________ Rob

So it is a foam filter! I drained the fuel tank today and when it was empty I looked inside the tank: Oh crap! There is some black stuff on the bottom of the tank. I touched it with my finger and noticed that it isn't crap at all but somekind of cushion...
So I finally had success with the boards search function! Foam filter, OK.
Fuel was clear and no rust etc. at all. The in-tank pump looked very good but the external pump looked really bad and all the related parts around it are so rusty that I had to stop working today. I have to get some new parts as I refuse to put anything rusty stuff back. Tomorrow to the parts shop and maybe in the evening there is a turbo whistling in the neighborhood. _________________ Mikko

+1
Found that same stuff you're showing (OP) when I removed my in-tank pump last summer.
Thought: Should I put some new foam back underneath the in-tank pump? So it won't slap/bounce against the tank bottom?
Regards, Harm.
PS. Nice piece of machinery, the in tank pump. _________________ Porsche 924 NA 1982 LY7A/A3A3 _ Greater driving pleasure never harmed anyone. |
