|
|
Good morning everyone. Well everything was going just fine with my 1979 924na, until the other day when I was headed to work. I got in and started it up and headed down the road. About a 1/2 mile into my trip, I noticed the oil pressure was going lower as I was going faster. . I let of the gas, pulled over, and turned the engine off. When I opened the hood and got out, there was a BIG oil puddle under the engine. I have determined there are no holes in the block, or oil pan, so I assume it's from the oil pump. My question is can the oil pump and associated seals by removed and replaced while the engine is still in the car? What seals or gaskets would I need? How hard would this be? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Good observation skills there... it would have been BIGGER problems if you weren't so vigilant and stopped as soon as you noticed the low pressure. _________________ 1980 Turbo

Yes, I believe you can replace them both with the engine in the car.
However, I find it hard to believe you would blow that much oil that quickly with no warning from that part of the engine.
There are two flex gaskets at the front and rear of the oil pan (not the pan gasket itself, but part of the kit). Are you sure those are OK? Is your crankcase breather hose still attached? No chance your blowing oil out of it? They get old and dry rot after a while, could have been holey for some time, but if you developed blowby, it could be spewing out of there, or even the dip stick tube... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

| Thanks for all the responses. I guess I need just get in there and get my hands a little dirty before I order any kind of parts. I'm sure I have a few more questions in the days to come. Thanks again. And if anybody has any other ideas, just let me know. |

I did not tighten the oil filler cap twice and got oil all over the place.
Once at the track. Funny looking in your rear view mirror and seeing all the smoke and the car is running perfectly. No oil cap was the problem. Too much in a hurry to get back on the track to notice. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Hey man... cool car you gotta show me your custom nose panel vent
covers..with a pic. You seem not 2 know if its the pump or not
to me that compounds the job.. it would be nice if you were able to
keep it in the car (the motor). Ive done pan gasket replacements
with it in the car. Kind of a pita. God luck, give us some pics. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

I'd advise to firstly determine where the oil exactly is coming from.
It's mentioned above... but you'll do more damage, spend more unnecessary time and money if you don't exactly know where it's from and why it happened. _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)
