RE: PET Illustration 101-10, position #5, part #N.011.903.3
The 924 block has five large freeze plugs (four on the oil filter side and one on the flywheel side); and three smaller ones, two of which are 16mm and one that is 14mm. I know where the two 16mm ones go, but can't seem to identify where the 14mm one goes. There's no mention of them in the FSM. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

The one on the front of the block is 16mm. The one on the back of the block is also 16mm. I'm wondering if the 14mm guy is for the head. The block is all taped up from getting cleaned and painted last night, will have another look at it this afternoon, as well as the head, to see what I can figure out. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Dan, for you, I'll go have a look at my 931 head.
In return, please come back on the wheel question I posted in my project questions topic

Sure! How about a link, though, I'm not sure what wheel question you're referring to. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=32667&sid=0ae9ef194c9b1009f92bb4083f949168
that's the thread.
I've checked both my 931 head, and my assembled 924 engine, but there's no 14mm plug to be found. I cannot remember any other plugs than the standard large plugs and the oil gallery plugs.
Since the PET list uses these 'covers' with the same reference (no 5), I guess there's a change somewhere where one of the caps is replaced by the current 16mm.
I'm absolutely sure there are no plugs besides the large 36mm (iirc) and 16mm plugs.
At least not on my 80- engines. The head doesn't have freeze plugs. (peterld, can you point the location where you've found a plug?)
edit:
in the 79 pet list the part is referenced between parenthesis, which means "part only similar as illustrated". Not sure what they mean by that... but there sure is a difference somewhere. I presume if it was an actual different part, they would have given it a reference by its own (eg. 6 instead of (5) ). _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)

Here is the top portion of the illustration:
You can see the front freeze plug referenced by position #5. You can also see one of the four freeze plugs on the oil filter side of the block referenced by position #1a. Then, for the rear of the block, you can see the part grouping with positions 1a,2,3,4,5, & 14, but no indication of where the bits go. The parts listing shows #5 twice, one as part # N.011.903.3, QTY 2 required, and one as part # N.011.907.4, QTY 1 required. There is no indication of a model year split, and this is in the 1980-85 version of the 924 PET.
I looked last night at two blocks, the one I'm prepping, and an extra that's on the shelf that still has the freeze plugs in it. I found all five of the large plugs and the two 16mm plugs, but can't figure out where this small guy goes. Maybe it goes on top of the block somewhere??? _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I'll be damned
Can't find a plug on the head…
Isn't it the plug on the Oil pump?
Haynes page 34, Fig. 1.4 Oil pump and components…
(That plug isn't mentioned in PET)
…
Oh darn

but why do they reference it as #5? if it is really a different part, why not give it a number on its own, like they do with 1a. _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)

Ich habe auch keine ahnung...........
36mm plugs on oil filter side and at rear of block, 16mm at front and rear of block and.......one of my heads has a plug in what would be the breather hole, but on closer examination is certainly NOT 14mm.
Incidentally, this is a bare hole - not threaded. One other head (79) has no hole at all, and third head (81) is threaded!
Talk about an each way bet. _________________ 80/81 932/8 ROW |
