Do I understand correctly that there is a coolant passage in the flange of the intake manifold and therefore taking it off requires draining the coolant?
Or is that not what ther recess in the flange is for?
Regards and cheers,

I've often wondered about that recess on the intake. I don't have any pictures handy of an NA head here at work, but on the 931 head, there are no water ports that could possibly feed water into that recess. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Hmmm. the picture in the Haynes does not show any ports on the flange either. But how accurate is the drawing. _________________ 1983 NA Alpineweiss since 2001

100% there is no water in the inlet manifold on either the N/a or Turbo. _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

well the recess does suggests it is a channel that connects different ports on the head, so there is no water 'in' the manifold, but it could flow along the manifold. But if you are so sure, I will believe you _________________ 1983 NA Alpineweiss since 2001

But if you look in the PET there is a recess in the head too. _________________ 1983 NA Alpineweiss since 2001

I know. That's what I indicated. But remember, on the NA head, there is a one piece intake manifold gasket that completely covers that recess anyway, and there are no water jacket ports there. As I said, I've often wondered about the recess but have never been able to figure out it's purpose or function. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

No water.
I've seen the channel and ports too and the only thing I can figure is some sort of pressure balancing between the exhaust valves/chambers or something. If you poke a wire or something into the holes it reaches all the way to the base of the exhaust valve. Primitive emissions controls of some sort probably...
I'll ask my engine guy next time I talk to him and see what he says. |
