Hi! Think I was a member here awhile ago when I had my 924. Thought I was in the registry, but apparently I am not. Not new to the Porsche world in any sense. Currently however, I am Porsche-less and am looking for a new project. I don't want another 911 series car. Wouldn't mind another 951... but way out of my project budget right now. So, I am thinking about a 931 or a 924 NA. I figure it will be a lot of bang for my buck. Now my definition of "bang" is a little different. "Bang" to me is my personal enjoyment, whether that is driving or wrenching on the car!

A little bit of my background. I started with a 84 944 and have worked my way up and down the model range. Everything from a 914 with a 6 to a fire breathing 930 (tho I liked the 951 better). There is just something about the 9X4 series cars I like. I am definitely not a purist.

Got rid of my fun cars when it was time to buy a house and a start a family (hence the lack of funds). Things are starting to get better and it is time to start looking.

I am also a bike nut. Owned quite a few. Mainly sport twins (ala TL1000R, Hawk GT, Ducati 851)

I do own some small machine tools (mill and lathe) currently converting the mill to CNC. I make quite a few different parts for motorcycles. I also do CF work (expect a lot of that in whatever project I start).

So as I save and decide which to go with, I will be here reading and asking questions.

Thanks

Eric

Welcome back!

Bang for the buck, I say 931...however, they're not any cheaper to restore to OEM than a 944 or 951. You can spend a lot more on a 951 to modify just due to the availability of mods, but to restore, the 931 ain't a cheap date But it is one of the best bang for the buck cars around if you're patient enough to find the best starting point that you can.

You might also consider the 924S with the 2.5L, as it is a roughly equivalent car in terms of performance to the 931. However, like the 924 NA, it is severely limited in terms of what you can do with the powerplant. Although you can do tons of mods suspension wise to make it (and the NA and the 931) faster thru the turns. All depends on what your game is.

How far are you willing to go to find a car? Budget?

Well yeah, that's true for just about any older car to restore to OEM. But, I never said anything about restoring to OEM. Having owned both a 924 and a 951 (and put money into both) I can say without a doubt, for ME a 951 would be much more expensive to own. Ask the $30k that went into my last one. I am not a newbie owner...

For me, the bang for my buck is not just performance. As I said earlier, it is about how much fun I have. That fun is driving, modifying and working on the car. So it is more than just the performance.

The 924s is out for me. Since I am going to be modifying and working on this car... if I wanted a 2.5 I would just buy a 85.5 and up 944 and play with that.

As far as budget? Who knows. Depends on what I feel like doing to it.

Welcome to the board! Come on over to the noob pool, the water is fine. I wish you the best of luck on your search, but we might have to knife fight over a 80-82 924NA in the PA/MD/DE area.

Once you're up and running, I'll be watching your posts for the CF and CNC work.

Before you make the car could you fab up a C -N- C music factory? Thanks.
