|
|
My starter has been giving me some trouble for awhile now. Every now and then my starter will turn over really slowly for a few revolutions and then will finally kick into gear and the car will start. Today after driving home, I stopped to check the mail and when I got back in to start her up the starter started turning over really slowly, but never kicked into gear. I let her sit for a few minutes and after a few slow revolutions, the starter kicked it up a notch and started the car.
I'm thinking that the solenoid may need to be cleaned up, and I definitely need to get a heat shield over it to protect it from my header.
If that turns out to not be the problem, I will be looking to buy a new starter, but I figure I should go ahead and upgrade if I'm replacing it. I saw a thread where raceboy said that a stater from an Auid 80 2.3L would bolt-in and it's a gear reduction starter.
I did a few searches on Ebay and came up with these two results:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360303782796&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400113858516&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
Which one is the correct one?
I know that the first one says that it's for a 924, but we all know that most sellers don't know wtf they are talking about on Ebay. Plus the ad says that it is for an Audi 80 with a 2.2L engine and the part number listed don't seem to match ones that I've seen on here before.
The second one has PN #: 0-001-108-026 which is I believe the number that martjinus used on his car. _________________ 1980 924 NA

Yea, not trying to spend $225 for a gear reduction starter when I can get one for more than half of that. _________________ 1980 924 NA

The first one looks like the orig stock one to me.
This is the nice, lighter, higher-torque one (though I'm thinking it isn't in fact a gear reduction starter) that I'm using:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Bosch-SR10X-Starter-/300474283649?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item45f5a9b681
It's Bosch reman part # SR10X.
Looks like Dan's got a better price still... definitely last longer, we just had to replace the first SR10X we got on the racecar... but I'm rather certain the ones Dan has wouldn't be legal for the racecar, sadly (or we'd run one). _________________ Vaughan Scott

the second one only weights

and looks like it'll work. Like I said, cleaning the solenoid may fix my problem and building a heat shield may prevent it. I'm still crossing my fingers that it will, because I've dropped more than enough money on this car here lately. _________________ 1980 924 NA

My suspects in order of ease to fix -
1- Battery post connections (remove, clean, re-attach..)
2- Starter grounding (remove starter, chase bolt, nut, starter flange, and block threads with taps/dies & clean mounting surfaces).
3- Replace the starter solenoid (combine this with #2 above unless you're feeling lucky/energetic). If the starter is running slow, the solenoid might be corroded internally, and this would either block starter power completely or cause just enough resistance to make it turn slowly. A simple disassemble-clean of the solenoids' piston (armature) and cylinder won't do in this case - the corroded parts in question are deeper inside the solenoid (could be cut open, but then there's no reasonable way to close it back up). _________________ "..it's made in Germany. Plus one with Smoothie...
Just went through this with a 356 6 volt starter motor. Solenoid kicked good but no spinning of the commutator. Took it apart and one of the brushes was stuck high and away from the commutator. Filed it and got it to make contact but when reassembled, still no spin. Put 6 volts directly to the motor, bypassing the solenoid and no spin. Put 12 volts directly to the motor and it barely spun. Suspect bad commutator. Can't win them all. Now sourcing a reman 356 starter motor.
