I feel your pain.
I'm in the middle of a head gasket replacement right now, with the spectre of a clutch job looming in my future. I can't wait (NOT!).
Maybe it has something to do with carb conversions. Install carburetors, and your clutch dies? _________________ Dan.

Don't worry, it only takes a really long time, you'll be fine. _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)

Is there any truth to this ?
If so, I'm ditching it all and going with an engine swap!

no mine was the original 1977 clutch that sat in a yard for 2 years, that had much more to do with it _________________ 81 924 N/A

....and mine isn't even really a bad clutch. The throwout bearing and guide tube are messed up. But if I'm taking it all apart, I'm damn sure going to replace the disk and pressure plate while I'm in there.
It sure would be cool if the Webers made that much power, though. _________________ Dan.
