I read in a Jim Pasha article somewhere that you can identify an early ('76, early '77) cylinder head by the shape of the exhaust ports exiting the head. Early is supposed to have a flat spot at the top of the port, and later has a totally round port. Is this correct? _________________ Dan.

I just took that pic of my ’76 head that sit in the garage and you can see the flat spot at the top.

I think the later heads have the same flat spot, so I don't think that ID's it. Check the valve size. Don't the really early heads have smaller valves? Also, probably a different casting/part #. Besides, I think they're unusual to run a-x, so most of what you'd see out there is the later style.
Edit: I just checked a few downstairs. All the n/a's have the half-rounded ports, all the turbos are round (no surprise, many of them have the ring inserts...) |

I checked valve sizes, and I have 40mm intake/33mm exhaust. So I guess it is a '77.5+ head.
It's a good thing, because I was about to push this car into the lake. I'm down to my last straw with this thing. _________________ Dan.
