Well the new (to me) tranny I put in recently has been leaking apparently. It's the 5 speed Audi box. And it look like it's coming from the rear of the unit. There appears to about 6 allen bolts that hold on the last section of the tranny, where the leak seems to be comin from. It's a very slow leak so I'm hoping I can just use some RTV sealant to fix it.
But my question is...If I unbolt this last section to reseal it, will it come straight down out of the way? I hope so because I only have about 2 inches of clearance before it hits the spare tire wheel well. I really don't want to have to drop the damn tranny again. Any ideas?? _________________ Michael

AFAIK the tranny will have to come out. The mainshaft with all your gears on it has to come out of the diff and you'll need the clearance. But I've never tried to pull the gearcase off the diff housing, so someone else may have a few tricks.
Just had a think... The drive shaft is bolted to the TT, and since you'd have to unbolt the coupler where it is, that gives an indication of how long the drive shaft is - it runs right over/on top of the diff inside the tranny and is mounted in roller bearings at the back of the gear case.. _________________ '88 944 Auto - may or may not resurrect |

It covers fifth gear and its shifter fork, so no it will not just pull down.
I just did the attached to sell the fifth gear set:

BTW removing just the allen bolts will not allow the housing to slide back, you must also punch a hole in the rubber cover and remove it to gain access to the rear bearing and nut. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Well shit. That really isn't what I wanted to hear. I just spent alot of time replacing the clutch and tranny recently and really don't want to pull it out again. Wish there was a product that would seal it up. Maybe I'll just try bubble gum and scotch tape..... _________________ Michael

| Are you sure that's where it is leaking and not from shaft seals? Shaft seals can be replaced without dropping the transmission. Maybe give it a proper clean and monitor it to see where its leaking from - unless you are certain. |

How tight are your bolts?

I'll see if the bolts need tightened. That would be great if that were the case. And I'll clean it up really good and see if the leak is coming from where I'm thinking it is. I'll report back. Thanks boys _________________ Michael

Alright I'm not happy. Cleaned it all up and drove for about 15 miles and checked it to find that it looks like its coming from the very rear of the tranny. There is a black (maybe plastic) round cover of some sort and it looks like it's coming from that area. And of course I can barely get my finger between it and the spare tire well. I'm not very experienced with this area so hopefully someone can tell me how bad the news is. I don't use the spare tire well for anything so I would be ok with cutting into it if it meant that I wouldn't have to drop the tranny again.
I did find a product at the auto store that is a stop leak kind of thing. It's made by Rislone. Ever heard of it? Worth a try? _________________ Michael

That's the cover I was referring to, it's removed by punching a hole in it and prying it out. I've never replaced one while the tranny was in the car, but it might be possible. Buy a new one and at least try before dropping the tranny. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

BTW don't use stop leak, it will only cause more trouble. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Ok so could I get enough room to work if I cut out the spare tire well? I have a buddy that can reweld it back in for me for nothing. _________________ Michael

Last I priced that round cover, it wasn't too expensive, thankfully. Hopefully that hasn't changed.
If you really wanted to do it quick and dirty... you could empty out the spare tire well, use a prybar to push that sheetmetal out of the way, then straighten it back to where it wants to be afterwards with a mallet... That's what I'd do on the racecar... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Well I like that idea the best so far. Vaughan, so is that black round piece actually the seal? And I can pry it out and put a new one in? _________________ Michael
