I have a problem and i would like some input and opinions on this issue.

i have an 87 924s and the rear hatch has a massive gap aroun the side edges near the top.. close to an inch gap and its not the rubber lining that is missing... the hatch does not seem to close all the way, but it latches and locks in place.

The struts do not work on it at all and need to be replaced.

Now.. I talked to a gentleman from "nineapart.com" (do not know if that is a familiar site among the board and how good it is) but he stated that this is due to one strut failing and causeing the frame to bend and twist and the only fix is to replace the frame or the whole hatch all toegther.

Why couldnt the frame be reshaped back? Would dismounting the glass and having it remounted fix this issue or should i start looking for a new hatch?

nineapart i believe quoted me 400 for a used hatch.. 500 with spoiler.

Does this seem high? I have read a few places that this place is a rip off.. but others swear by them.... any opinions? I have a whole parts list of a bunch of stuff i wanted that ill post for you to see... keep in mind this is from my email from them:

Owners Manual - $40.00

Rear Glass Hatch - $400.00 or with spoiler $500.00 (This is a very common problem on these cars and it is not from the previous owners sound system but it is because the rear hatch shocks don't work evenly and people don't buy new shocks. When the rear hatch shocks start to get weak, they never fail at the same time. One always fails more than the other one so what happens is when you open your hatch, one side is holding the hatch up and the other side is sagging a few inches more. Because of this the frame tends to twist and separate from the glass. There is really no fix for it, except to replace it with a good one because once the frame has been stretched out of shape, it will never be the same)

Roof Liner - We assume you need the rear cover panel that covers the sunroof assembly. If so, $80.00.

Low Profile Power Mirrors - The 968 mirrors will work on your car. No problem, we have sold many of them. $500.00 for the pair.

Seats - $1,000.00 a pair.
Carpet - $400.00
Door Panels - $200.00 per side
Spare Tire - $150.00
Tools - $200.00
Manuals for the Car - We have the factory service manual on a CD, $19.99. Or we have one set of NEW Original Factory 6 Volume Service Manual in stock. (This is now out of print), $600.00.
Center Console - $200.00
Driver Tail Light - $80.00 per side
Bulb Assembly - $20.00 per side

ok i have seen the how to on repairing the glass... but the gap itself is not with the glass...

The gap is actually between the Frame and the car.... is this still a glass issue.. or somthing else that im not catching...

my option is to try and unmount the whole hatch and see if i can remount it and see if it lines up better... Ill ask my fiance to get some pics for me later so i can show you.. might take a few days though.

ill see if i can find pics online as well to aid with this.

if its still the window issue to fix let me know.

I would find someplace else to buy parts myself.

Those prices may be okay if you have a concours 911 of some sort, and the parts are in perfect new condition, and you're rich, and don't care how much you have buried in your car. But we're talking used parts for a car that's worth $3500 tops in the market, with littl chance of an increase in resale.

Why don't you sell that company your 924S, take the million $$$, and buy a few new Porsches?

The Seller is correct that it's impractical to try to reshape, and rebond the hatch frame to the glass. While it's very expensive to purchase a new rear hatch (which comes with the frame bonded to it) there are lots of used ones for sale, and in fact some people give them away.

Thanks for the reply.

yeah i was figuring those prices were high.... I mean a used carpet kit cost just as much as a new one would.

ill jut have to shop around and see if i can find a new (used) hatch.

i figured i would be going that route anyway but was hoping to avoid it.

Ill have the glass removed and save it for later incase i should need replacement glass or anyone else should.

I figure if enough people try to reseal it.. someone will blow theres out and need it

Depending on the color, I may have some of the parts you need for a lot less. PM me if interested.

There is a way to adjust the frame-to-body relationship if you look inside the car above the back seat, just in front of the hatch where the hinges are, there are two plastic caps that cover the bolts holding the hinge to the body. Pop the plastic off and see if the bolts have loosened.

You'll need some assistance getting it lined up.

There SHOULD be some gap around the hatch but not that much. Plus, if the hatch was so far out of adjustment, I'd think it wouldn't want to close at all.

Can you tell if the glass has actually separated from the frame?

The obvious question to me right off the top ..You have checked for glass
& frame seperation like was mentioned ... though doesnt seperation most often happen on the top causing the frame to rub on the over hang lip of the back roof line.

I recently gave away a hatch, I had one on the old N/A when it was scrapped and I sold one for a pittance a while back.

They are large, heavy and don't break very often so if you can collect it shouldn't be hard to find one much cheaper!

For the owner's manual, try ebay and/or junk yards. I found mine, used but quite usable, for $15 shipped on ebay.

Here in KC, we have a couple of large junk yards that let you go through the yard and pull any part you want, and charge you junk prices for what you find. I got an unused spare this week for about $12.

Sorry for the long delay in response to this thread.

I will be home in may from this deployment and will be tackling the car hard. The hatch and replacing the head are my main jobs out the gate.

The idea of checking the screws on the hinge and trying to re-align is a route i will check first. Im assuming this is my main problem since the hatch does not like to open and close very well at all... i have to wiggle it a little from time to time to get it to open.

On the top of the hatch where the metal fram running across on top of the glass is... is seperating from the hatch.

I will be taking it to a glass place and having them unmount the entire glass and hinges and remount it and hopfully solve some of the issues with the hatch.

The hope here is to realign the hatch completely and get it back in place... if this fails then ill have to find a used hatch to put on.

Most of the parts i wanted listed earlier i have found cheaper prices elsewhere and will of course be constantly hitting you fellows up for parts from time to time.

For those of you that remember or have possible seen some photos, this car was in pretty bad shape when i got it. But with just the very little money i have put into it already its coming back very well. The engine bay has alot of electrical issues i need to fix (some ghetto wiring to replace).

The car was originally white but was repainted red (poorly) and the clear is coming off.. the underhood, trunk and engine bay are all still alpine white. The idea i am having is to either repaint the whole car back to White, or remove as much as i need to and repaint the entire car to red so everything matches as much as possible.

The interior has been stripped mostly and will be getting a new dash, carpet, and seats reupholstered when the time comes for that and a new center console when i can locate one for a decent price. My interior is black and would like to keep it that way (wouldnt mind getting the stiching in the seats and dash to be red if possible)

Cant wait to get this car finished and back up to a beautiful finish and look almost new if not better at least thats my goal.. we shall see if it makes it there.
