The Haynes manual makes sound pretty easy to pop the speedometer out. Just reach behind and push it right out. HAH! I tried everything short of taking the steering wheel off and pulling out the entire dashboard! It was not easy, and I have not yet completed the task.
Can anybody offer some helpful hints on how to get the Speedo outta there? _________________ Fred- 1979 924 |

| Its a bitch but the manual isn't lying to you. Took me maybe 20 minutes to get that and the tach out you just have to reach up behind it and alternate where you push, top bottom left right is how I did it. I also pryed a bit from the front with a flathead screwdriver but I was getting agravated, I don't recomend this because you may crack the gauge cluster. The hardest part I found was disconnecting the odometer cable as I couldnt get my hand up to it easily. |

Once you have done it a couple of times you build up scar tissue in the right places... _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

yea first time is the hardest because the rubber seal around the gauge does its job really well. I popped the multigauge out first and then the tach. I was then able to get both hands behind the speedo and push. _________________ 1980 924 NA

I usually pop the combo gauge since it's easier to reach the speedo cable through its opening. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Yup its the seals, My 2 cents is U might want to
remove the steering wheel to ease the access the seals are
a pita is all the 1 st time. (no gay sexual
connotation. meant at all with my words.. PITA, seals,
the first time) So chill. Just grab the guage from the back
and give it some good side to side and outward pressure &
the seal should give. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

Well, I got the darn thing out. Wasn't easy. Swapped in the other one. Broke one of the little lightbulbs in the process. GRRR. Went around the block. Still no odometer reading. Get a speedometer reading, but on odometer.
Thanks to RAT for showing me THIS: http://www.924.org/techsection/odo_speedo_repair.htm
What the heck, worth a try.
Don't worry about the lightbulb. There's a pick-a-part junkyard nearby that has 3 924s on the lot. Next weekend I'll just head on out there and grab as many as I can pry off. _________________ Fred- 1979 924 |

So I opened up the speedo, and sure enough, that little wheel had slipped back and disengaged the worm gear. Pushed the wheel back in place, put a dab of super glue on the pin, and it looks tobe good to go! Really easy fix! Thanks!
Now I get to fiddle around with getting the silly thing back in the car. Yeesh. _________________ Fred- 1979 924 |
