Hello all this is my 1st post.
I joined the forum because all the great info I saw on here and I also had a few questions.
This 924 is my parents but they are going to be gifting it to me soon. (i'm working on them. lol they never drive it)

anyway we went to start it up and there was some gas misting from this hose here.
Closer inspection shows it has signs of dry rot.
Can someone point me in the right direction by telling me where I can get this part and how I disconnect it to repair it?

I don't know if this end disconnects or if it keeps going and I need to get the whole piece.?

My parents bought this car with 10k miles on it for $10k a long time ago.
my mom drove it ever so often and I learned how to drive stick on it.
it has around 40k miles on it.
but since then I have moved out and bought my own house and they have nice NICE cars now and never drive this.
so it sits in a cover it garage out back of there house.
always fighting Mice off and i keep busting them about letting it sit.
because every time they take it out there is something to fix.
So thats where I keep working on them to gift it to me.
I think its working, I cleared a spot in my garage and I just have to get it running and drive it to my house. :O)

I want to give it some TLC and use it in the summer as a second car.

any way.
I don't know much about it he said its a 1988 and has the 944 motor.
its non turbo.
5 speed.

it has mint brown interior and exterior is near mint.

I am siked to "hopefully' get it home soon.
any info anyone can offer me would be great.
hear are a few pics and an old one with my dad next to it. lol

thanks for reading and for the help if any.
I was thinking about buying one of those Haynes books for it to.

Porsche does not necessarily do the model year change in September as Detroit does.

You can tell for sure by the VIN number under the windshield on the left front corner.

924S and 944 were recalled for a faulty fuel hose. Guess which one? contact your local Porsche Dealer to see if you can still get the recall done for free.

If you don't have written documentation showing when the timing and balance shaft belts were replaced, don't start the engine until they are.

The Hayness book is a waste of money. If you're serious about owning the car. Buy a copy of the Porsche Factory 944 Workshop Manual. It's expensive, BUT there is no substitute.

great tips/advice thank you.
So lets say it is not covered under the recal, what would need to be replaced ?
just the rubber section, or is that part connected right to the metal line that runs all the way under the car.

Also is there a way to just cut out the rubber part and put new rubber tube there?

I know that is what my father is thinking and that is why i am on here to ask because I know that is not the best idea. haha

You can get a kit to replace the rubber section of your fuel lines here : http://www.rennbay.com/fuel-hose-replacement-deluxe-kit-porsche-944-early-late-p-147.html

While you're at it, you should replace the short jumper hose on the fuel rail. This is the hose that usually leaks first. It has caused many fires on 924S/944's. Here : http://www.rennbay.com/fuel-hose-jumper-oem-porsche-944944t-855-p-148.html

Travis at Rennbay is a great guy to deal with, and he can help you with advice or any other parts you may need.

That is a good looking 924S, but your dad really should see someone about his dandruff problem.

First, this is the official fuel hose recall:
http://nhthqnwws111.odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/docservlet/Artemis/Public/Recalls/1990/V/RC-90V061-NN.PDF

It is not the long hoses from the firewall, it is the short hose 6" off the fuel rail.

The long hose you point to has to be replaced. When I checked for the hose for the 924S, the 944 early hose kit may not fit. If you want the final answer contact Vic at Pauer tuning.
http://www.pauertuning.com/index.htm

Yes, it is the 944 2.5L. The 1988 is the preferred 924S because it has the extra 10HP--160 (1987 150HP). The DME is different for the 1988 as well.

Cool, my dad always said it had the better motor in it.

So I see the link you sent and it is a different hose for the recall so that stinks.
But in those pictures I do not even see the hose the crosses over the top of the motor like in our 924.
why is that?

Is this hose replacement kit (moorepower) showed me what I need or is this for the recall?

thanks for the help

Call Rennbay and make sure the hose kit that moorepower posted can be used on the 1988 924S or is a variation needed.

I am not certain, but the 924S hose kit is longer because of the steel fuel lines beginning under the brake booster.

The short hose on the fuel rail. Look at the hose---there should be a number on it. See if it is the upgraded hose or the old hose per the recall information.

Hi All I have not been home to look at the part number on the fuel line to check for the recall.
But I have a question so I can understand this kit more and explain it to my dad before we call to make sure about the correct length.

How does this connect?

http://www.rennbay.com/fuel-hose-replacement-deluxe-kit-porsche-944-early-late-p-147.html

Do you cut the hard line right under the rubber fuel hose where it is mounted next to the brake booster here?
then the kit comes with a connector that clamps the metal fuel hard line?
Also does the kit come with the return line as well?

and then this end the new hose in the kit just screws on here?

and this is the hose the recall talks about and I should replace as well with this kit?
http://www.rennbay.com/fuel-hose-jumper-oem-porsche-944944t-855-p-148.html

thanks again for the help.
I am hoping I have this all right i just need some clarification.
thanks

Yep, just cut the line with the tool supplied with the kit. Then slide the fittings on onto the pipe and flange the end.

thanks a lot ,
looked up compression fittings after writing what i wrote and they look pretty easy and seam to work for lots of people with problems like mine.
so I am siked.
I'm going to my pops tomorrow to measure the lines, then calling up and seeing about getting the kit with those length lines.
Also I have to remember to check the writing on the small hose from the recall to check the recall paper.

thanks again.
I hope I can show some finished work here someday sooner than later. lol

peace

PostPosted: Wed Oct 13, 2010 10:07 am    Post subject: Got it home. Reply with quote

Hi All I finally got the 924s home to my house and snug in my garage.
I towed it today using my AAA+.
I started it and moved it around a few times with the gas line all taped up and hissing a little gas, just so we didn't have to push it..

It is not really "my" car yet so I cannot go crazy and pull out the interior to lighten it up or anything. lol (not that I was thinking about it because the interior is in Mint condition)

It is technically still my mothers car.... (Her plates, her registration, her insurance.)
She is afraid if she lets me own it now she will never get to drive it again. lol
I understand that, but ensure her that won't be the case.....
So I have agreed to garage it and fix it and give it some TLC in exchange for being able to drive it when ever I want. LOL
She said she wants to drive it some more as well so we will share it for now.
Just so you know how much she drives it...
Last year I think she took it out once, so I will be the one driving it the most.
She is just sick of it just wasting away in the "Cover-it Garage" in her back yard, and she wants me to have it anyway.
She just bought a 2010 Lexus IS250 AWD, so that is a little more her style.
But she is still paying for the repairs and the insurance and plates for the Porsche so whatever.. LOL
I am also thrilled because it gets great gas mileage.
I'm a spoiled 28 year old Family man.

Well now that I have started babbling...
1st on my list is calling up and ordering that Fuel Line Master repair kit.
I need to call and make sure I can get the hose length in 24" length.

Then I think I will tackle,
Changing fuel lines
Change oil
Change Diff Fluid (have to look that one up)
Inspect plugs & wires and other related stuff and replace if worn.
Check brakes they didn't feel up to snuff, replace or bleed whatever is needed.
Give the leather seats a rub down/massage.
Buy floor mat for drivers side.
Probably scrub the motor with a toothbrush
and Wash and WAX it really good.
Use weatherstrip rubber protector on all of it. (its in great shape, just don't want it drying out on me.)
Check belts

I noticed the dash does have a few splits in it.
I assume that is just part of age and there is nothing I can do besides replacing the whole thing. Not happening!
is that about it?

Well I know you all love pics on this forum so I snapped a bunch right after the tow truck drove away.
Here it is as of now, I know I can make it even nicer.

I love the body style of this car that is what attracts me to it.
I love the slant rear window and flip up headlights.
ever more cause they are round.

Hi All I just got off the phone with Travis at Rennbay and I ordered the replacement kit.
He said he didn't need a year or anything because all the hose lengths for the 924 are the same.
Lets hope so....
lol
anyway it was $121 with the shipping.

He told me that the big main line I can undo a section of the metal line under the car and attach the new hose on a work bench then re-install it.
But the return line I have to do it while it is in the car next to the break booster.
He said its a tight squeeze but it is not that hard to do so I should be fine.

I can't wait to get that in and have this all fixed up RIGHT!

I told him that my father wanted to cut it out and just use a new piece of hose and clamp it.
and he told me a story about a guy with a 944 who did that and it leaked and his motor caught fire and was ruined so I am going to tell that to my parents for piece of mind knowing I am fixing it right for us.

Hope to be working on it this Sunday. !
