Do yourself a favor: go to the Mission in Carmel by the Sea, and go the Aquarium in Monterey. You won't regret either side trip

{EDIT}
Other notable and worthwhile side trips:
Mount Tamalpais, Marin Headlands

Muir Woods National Monument, Marin Headlands

Point Bonita Lighthouse, Marin Headlands

Alcatraz

Golden Gate Bridge

Palace of Fine Arts

Japanese Tea Garden

Mission at Carmel by the Sea

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Bixby Bridge, Big Sur Coast
