I just finished racing in the 24 Hours of LeMons race at Buttonwillow last weekend.
What a blast. It's so awesome to see all those old beaters out there.
I've done quite a few track days and I enjoyed the cars at this track event much more than the ones at the open track days.
Unfortunately I didn't have a $500 924.
A friend's boss gave him a 93 Honda Accord.
We did a valve adjustment, timing belt, balance shaft belt delete, fluid changes, and gutted out the interior.
We upgraded the brake pads, added a junk yard sway bar and installed a roll cage.
No go fast parts on this 230,000 family sedan. :-p
Here it is:
Our Team Name was "Vehicular Manslaughter". One of our team members spattered some blood (red paint) on the hood.
and honda happened to make their hood latch look like a face, so it looked like there was someone looking out from under the hood. :-p
The race went very well for us. None of us had done a lemons race or any wheel to wheel racing. Our car ran well and drove across the finish line on the checkered flag lap! We placed 51st in a field of 173. Top 30%! We didn't realize how important pit stop speeds were until the race was on. We were very slow at fist and took a while to figure out what we needed to have at hand to be prepared to fuel up, check tire pressure, torque, and switch drivers as fast as possible.
Between the first and second day we replaced the radiator to take care of a leak in the plastic housing at the top of the radiator. Also did a cap, rotor, fuel filter, and plug wires in hopes of taking care of a misfire at about 5,000 rpm. The misfire wasn't fixed but it didn't stop us. It was a great weekend and it was lots of fun to race and see all of the interesting cars out there.
Unfortunately I didn't get much of a chance to talk to other teams about their cars because I was busy working on our car, and the cars were out on the track when I had any free daylight time. There was 1 924 out there. it was an '87 S with a big PacMan where the rear window should have been.
Here are some pictures taken by a photographer at the event:
There were quite a few 944's. I believe there were 5 of them. Here are a couple of the more interesting ones. :-p
Notice the the beer tap on the trunk of this bmw 2002. To my surprise when I went over to talk to them the first night, they handed me a plastic cup and had me fill it with beer from the tap!
This geo metro had a motorcycle engine from a Honda CBR1000 mounted where the passenger's seat should have been. It was pretty fast. It sounded awesome.
This was by far the slowest car on the track. It ran until the end though. Slow and steady finished the race but didn't win. On the second day they mounted a corner worker's passing flag to the roof because it was so slow. lol
This e30 was the winner, completing the most laps.
There were quite a few e30s out there. Easily the most common car at this race. _________________ 1980 Porsche 924 N/A USA

You missed us
Rooster Juice Racing
- we ran a '79 924.
Easy to miss us tho - we conked out with a distributor issue early. We'll be back next year though. We were parked in the same garage with the Pac Man Fartini guys
