Engine Bay Now
TA DAH! Here's where the money went!
Drives pretty nice now. Still lots of gremlins to sort out. It was neglected and abused for a long time, but I'm doing my best to get it back in tip top shape!

Nice work! What's the CR w/the JE pistons?
And is that a shiny new TIMING COVER I see? _________________ '88 944 Auto - may or may not resurrect |

CR? What does CR mean?
They are JE forged 2nd oversize pistons, with new wrist pins, rods and bearings.
What else do you want to know?
I'll be honest, I didn't source them myself. The mechanic I went to have the engine rebuilt had them. So far they seem to be doing the trick. I'll see what else I can find out about them. _________________ Fred- 1979 924 |

Compression ratio. Well, I'm not sure right now today, The mechanic said about 9.0:1, but I'm still breaking in the engine. I'm just about to hit the 500 mile mark and so I'm going to be changing the oil, adjusting the valves and torqueing things down a bit in the next month or two, (just what the Haynes manual recommends) and when I do that, I'll be checking the compression again. So I'll let you know. _________________ Fred- 1979 924 |

I'm curious partly because the reliefs in the crowns are huge - are you running some very aggressive valve setup?
The build looks great, BTW. Nice job. _________________ '88 944 Auto - may or may not resurrect |

Great Job !
is that a new engine coolant expansion tank or is it somehow painted?
If new, where did you get it?

That expansion bottle is a nearly new one. We found it in a salvage car in a pick-a-part lot in Nampa, Idaho. I can't recall what it's called right now, but I also found a nearly new little plastic nozzle that kinda tucks in under the nose panel at the front of the engine bay that attaches to a flexible tube that goes down to what I think is a water pump (?) out at that salvage yard. Mine was pretty cracked and corroded and brittle, and finding these in good shape is kinda difficult, so I hear. These were nice and white, no UV damage and had hardly a scratch on them.
The timing cover was pulled off that smae car and given a good scrub and a coat of black high-temp engine paint, same as used on the block.
Of course there are things I would like to do still.
* I think replacing the fuel lines is in order. These are working fine, but the braiding is a little dull and frayed in places.
* Most of the hoses are new, but here and there we reused the old ones, so I'd like to get around to replacing all of them eventually.
* Those things that lift and separate the wires, some of them are missing a few teeth, so I'll have to get around to sorting those out as well. Without them, the spark plug wires kind of just sit on top of the valve cover, and I don't much like that.
* Speaking of which, the distributor case at the back is looking a little yucky, so I might take it off and give is a polish or a shot of paint, just to make it look nice.
* Also, I have been looking at the tubes coming off the vacuum device at the back of the engine bay,
They don't inspire confidence, so I would like to find a good replacement for those.
You know how it is. The more I look, the more I see. Basically, tho, I intend to put all my time and energy into the engine and vital systems before I turn my attention to body work and interior stuff. Still, I think I'm off to a good start.

The white snorkel helps cool the alternator that it is connected to.
I would recommend not letting the spark plug wires touch the head. It can get pretty hot and you don't want to damage the shielding of the wires. I think I had mine zip tied to the passenger strut tower. There are two little openings that work perfectly. You can see them in your photo.
I bought silicone vacuum lines for $15 to replace my plastic ones. They look better and they had the right outside diameter to fit in he vacuum canister you pointed to. The inside diameter was perfect too. _________________ '80 924 M471,Wideband O2, Full coilover susp,23/19 sways,Bilstiens,KLA Strut Brace,Roll Bar,Test Pipe,BBS RS, Willwood BBK
