I've heard about the hype synthetic engine oils are getting.
Any truth about them?
Also, what about Royal Purple?

if you have not heard anything about the deletion of ZDDP from standard engine oil in the last several years then you have some reading to do. Synthetic oil is a must for older cars unless you are running a diesel or race oil with adequate quantities of ZDDP.

I had read and heard about the reduction/deletion (I'm not exactly sure which) of ZDDP which is why I was a bit worried about it.
Any particular synthetic that you'd recommend? as opposed to the Valvoline VR1 20w50 I'm using at the moment anyway.

I prefer to stick with brad penn.

but oil is going to vary a lot with opinions.

I had the same question a while back. After a little time at the library reading consumer reports, scouring message boards and gathering opinions, the answer I came up with is that Valvoline VR-1 20w-50 or Kendall GT-1 20w-50 is the way to go. But apparently it's a matter of opinion.

Valvoline vr1 is fine, but not a good oil to keep in your engine for a long period of time. Synthetic is a better daily driving oil. The argument over what kind could go on for 1000 pages. I say you can't go wrong with Mobil 1.

I switch everything I own to synthetic after break-in. Lawn mover, to work truck. My work truck has 180,000 miles on it. Last year I replaced the tranny so while I was that close I replaced the oil pump and rear seal.
The number 5 main bearings show no signs of wear still grey as they were when new. The truck still has the oil pressure that it did when new also.
Cost a little more, but I still change the oil between 2,500 and 3,000 miles.
When knurling guides the resizer at times will stop in the valve guide. When that happens I use synthetic oil to get the resizer to clear the valve guide. That's how slick that stuff is.
Draw back. If you have a gasket that might leak with regular oil, it will for sure with synthetic. It smells worse also, when it burns on an exhaust system.

Hype? you write about synthetic oil like it was something new and unknown. Its been standard in the industri for years. Why not take advantage of 100 years of development I wont put anyhing other than a resonable specd synthetic in my cars, race car or daily driver dont matter (just different viscosity grades)..

brad penn

It is not just synth/non-synth, it has to do with the flat-tappet overhead cam motors and zddp-deficient oils causing premature wear to followers and cams.....

but you pick what works for you
