Bought the car in Dec 2008. Since then it has been very reliable. Last spring, the clutch was not returning as it should so we set out to fix it.
After completeing the clutch hydraulics, it wouldn't start. Adjusting the under dash wirein seemed to repair the problem; I drove it for a while. Went to Walmart, stopped at Subway for a sub. We assumed the damage was under the dash. The next day, my son was under the dash to re-hang the wire harnesses.
Again, wouldn't start.
Checked the harnesses in the area we were working in, and found a connector that felt wrong....and let the engine start! We tied them up and the car kept running. NOW, we're going to make it right under the dash, right? WRONG!
While working under and gently moveing the cluster, the enging started sputtering when we move one cluster, and was reliably repeated - however, Eli managed to make the enging die while trying the spot the problem. We've not been able to get it started since. It's been a week. We've begun conitiuity testing but then ...
... our other car blew a head gasket last weekend. We didn't even have a way to get parts until this morning. _________________ Mark

| check your grounds make sure they are clean, some light sand paper will do the trick i have had nothing but electrical problems with my 924s and they there tends to be a very simple fix. I also put a switch start in my car, it works a lot better then the key did it just made better connections than the tumblers ever could. best of luck. |

Checked grounds; they're all clean and shiny. Previous owner was a dedicated wrencher. _________________ Mark

i had a big issue with my key tumbler, basically when the key was released the contacts would not spring back in to place and thus the power would cut out when the car would catch, killing it instantly. I solved this but getting rid of the key start all together. I replaced it with a nice red power switch and a spring loaded starter switch. However the key is still needed to disengage the steering lock, so in terms of security its all still there. here is the thread about the switch, i can give advice if you chose to install them.

Sorry I haven't posted the results...
Turned out that there were 2 points of failure:
1. The position and speed sensors managed to disconnect themselfes (with the help of a friend that installed the new clutch hydraulics). They seemed OK to the eye.
2. The DME relay was bad; it tested OK with my multi-meter within 10%. Obiously my normal electronics experience was wrong. BTW, I had used the jumper from Clark's Garage. It hadn't helped because it wouldn't start if those sensors weren't talking the DME.
Reason for the continued confusion: 2 problems, since the stoke, I have had issued going under the dash, and we were looking elsewhere because we had alread tested them both.
Another friend, with no experience with Porsches, studied the problem and the schematics and asking a lot of questions. When he relaxed on his retainer after we both gave up he suddenly solved the issue and with less than 1/2 hr. he got her running .
We put the car back in business in January, 2011, just before a series of terrible snow storms. Know that these cars are very good winter cars. I was able to get around just fine. _________________ Mark
