|
|
| As i am still looking for a porsche i came across a 1987 951 with a timing belt failure, 3 valves bent and the pistons look ok... so far. If i do the work, how much do you guys think it would cost me? A decent used cylinder head is $400, valves about $35 each. What other major damage can be done with a broken timing belt? |

Head, valve cover and cam tower gaskets, exhaust gaskets, FOES components are probably around a grand. Oh, and a ridiculous amount of time.
Worth it, though, if the car is in good shape. _________________ Toofah King Bad

951s are getting pretty cheap. Sure you don't want a running one? _________________ Toofah King Bad

of coarse i do!! just need to close out a sale of one of my audi's can't have it all (like some people on this forum, sheesh a whole garage full of nicely built porsches... really?! come on i'm jealous)
I started looking at the 924 than moved on to the 944 and now looking into a 951. Def. will buy one just a matter of time.
i also have a question about track. i've never been on a track (i know i know i really missing out) anyways, all my friends here have nice cars, and they can talk sooo much about their cars and once in a while they would show off their acceleration.. i have been searching for a track around my area, and could not find one. I did actually find one but it was something like 950 buck for 15 lap!!! Either i'm just a poor wanna-be or your track experience is cheaper. I'm in Western MA.
Oh yeah and if anyone is interested in a VERY well kept 2000 Audi a8L with an upgraded tranny of a 2003. pm me. I guess i pretty much said everything in this post haha |

PCA has driver education events that get you on the track. Reasonable cost. Join PCA. pca.org. There is also PCA racing, but I am referring to Driver Education (DE.) It is good fun track time. PCA has the best instructors, and you learn a lot about track driving and car control in general. _________________ "Never get out of the boat. Absolutely goddamn right. Second. I bought my turbo for 2500 and it only needed a FPR and a master cylinder(among other old car things).
Just my $.02 _________________ 1987 951. Standard upgrades

Oh it definitely was. It's a great car and once you know your way around it it's not so bad to work on.
My point is my car didn't need valves to get it running, so you can probably find a better deal if you look hard enough. _________________ 1987 951. Standard upgrades

If you were an ebay vulture like me, in time you could probably find everything you needed to complete the car for just a few hundred dollars. But do you have the experience to to know what you are getting into? definately not first-timer work.
FYI for those of you who are looking to get a 951, the later models are much nicer. By later I mean 87 and up. I cant list all the changes made in 87, ABS, stronger wheel bearings, air bags were a few obvious items, but for me the most noticeable is the smooth quiet ride offered by the later cars. In a word... refined. The 86 by comparison is like an older 944 with a turbocharger. Just my two cents.

I think that my next car will be a 944 or 951. In doing my research on them I'm surprised how much aftermarket suport there is for 944/951s compared to the 924. I'm probably a good year out from buying one though. _________________ 81 924 N/A
