|
|
I have been looking at the appropriate PET diagrams while looking to upgrade my '77 to 23.5 mm bars and a sway bar and it appears that an early 944 Torsion bar carrier has significantly different mounting points than the early carrier. The body mount brackets in front of the carrier may not be the same and then the newer one has that sort of wing arch, that fastens up to the wheel well(I think). Does the later carrier really fit?
There is only one 944 around here and I haven't been able to find the people who own it so I have to just sneak in to look at it and then it is hard to see it well with the wheels on the ground. _________________ Mike

That is correct, the mountings are different, and not particularly interchangeable. _________________ Vaughan Scott

You should be able to put any 924/44/68 t-bar in your current carrier. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Thanks. I'll pursue just the torsion bars and probably the adjustable spring plates(bushing mods rqd). I had gotten the impression from other posts that it would be easier to just get a complete carrier and put it in.
My car has one replacement rocker panel without the hole(welded over, old hole still there), so unless I get brave enough to cut up the body the carrier has to come out to replace the T-bars. I'm going to use Chrenan's method of install a sway bar, need about an 18mm to go with my 24mm tubular from a 951.
PS have found a front aluminum A arm so I can figure out that mod. _________________ Mike

Dropping the carrier is not a huge deal. I would take it out, weld on factory sway bar mounts, and have it coated.
Re-indexing article HERE. I followed the instructions and dimed the ride height on the first attempt. _________________ Toofah King Bad

How do I find out the proper location/angle for welding the brackets? Or, do I just reassemble the suspension entirely on the ground and locate them to fit? What would you suggest coating with? just rust preventative only on the bracket or POR-15 the entire carrier? After all I did have a Scout II for 30 years so I'm well familiar with rust. _________________ Mike

Test fit everything (bar, bushings, brackets) on the ground before disassembly and mark it well for your welder. . .the bar ends up quite close to the exhaust. You should also put it all together and have the welder tack the brackets in place, then make sure the bar turns freely before the final bead is laid down.
As for coating, I powdercoated mine. . .but I powdercoat everything:

Rasta: thanks for the tips. The indexing article is really good, but I have two problems. First by looking at the torsion bar end cap the bushing appear to be wasted as the end cap is metal to metal on the housing which is throwing off my ground to torsion bar measurement. The car was actually level, I'll have to do some guesstimating on that one. Secondly I don't have the banana arm to measure from so I'll design something up That can be fastened to the carrier. I've got a CNC router for the business so making up some pseudo banana arms out of plywood should be pretty easy. I hope the program can handle values for the 22mm torsion bars. _________________ Mike
