Hey guys... long time no posts..but have been reading this forum once in a while..
I lost my keys to the 81 931. one key operated all doors, hatch and ignition before..
I have searched the forum, and read that one key should fit all, including the ignition.. right..??
So.. I got the hatach key cylinder out, and took it to the locksmith, and had one made. But did not fit the ignition..but opened the doors and hatch fine.. just ignition did not turn at all...
Anyone had similar problem that maybe helpful to me..??
or do I have to take out the ignition cylinder,.. which can be pita..???
your help is appreciated... _________________ 81 931 RED; My Real Toy

I have one key for the doors and rear hatch......and a second key for the ignition.......I just assumed a PO replaced the ignition lock and never got it re-keyed to fit the door key........but I'm not sure.
On moy 1990 928 the doors, hatch and ignition use the same key _________________ 1981 931 (Canadian car)

thanks for your quick reply..
well.. mine, one key operated all...including the ignition..
and did read some posts here, that hatch key cylinder is the easiest to take out,.. so I did. cause when I looked under the steering wheel,..to see if I could take out the ignition cylinder,.. it chickened me out.. haha..
Well... the new key make fits good on both doors, and hatch,..but can not turn the ignition cylinder... what you guys think..?? should I just take out the ignition cylinder out..?? I am afraid that I would break something... hahahah..lol.. _________________ 81 931 RED; My Real Toy

I cannot recall if our cars had a 'valet' key. If so, you may have to use a door lock cylinder as the template.
Alternatively, you can sometimes have a dealer make a key for you based on VIN number - not sure if they place a time limit on this service when available. So if your locks have not been replaced, this may be an option.
That said, if the new key opens the doors, and the key you had opened your doors and worked in the ignition, you are probably good to go, relatively. It may be that the new key just needs some adjustment due to wear and tear in the ignition cylinder. Try pushing the key in further when trying to turn it, and pulling it slight out while trying to turn it. Try this experiment in a range of depths. _________________ "Never get out of the boat.
