I am in the process of replacing/rebuilding my front struts. I pulled the old ones apart and was in the process of re-assembling when I went to install the top cap that holds the cartridge in the strut housing and realized that the shaft on the new insert is larger than the old.

While inspecting the top cap it looks as though there is a seal in it that if removed would allow it to slide over the new larger shaft.

Is this the correct method? It would seem so given that the new gas/oil insert is a sealed unit and the old actually required the seal to keep the oil in.

Anyone run across this?
