Hi, i have another thread but i figured id post this here because its kind of urgent. I just bought this 77 924 last week and its been fine up until now.

However tonight i have realized my brakes arnt working very well at all! i can put my foot all the way down and it slows us down to finally a stop. Can anyone tell me what are my options or what could have happened, it hasnt happened until today.

ive been trying to look up a few things online about this and low pressure could be low brake fuild, a airbubble, or a broken master cylinder...

i noticed today that there was an unusual ammount of exhaust coming out and it happened twice, at serparate times in the day. Is there a chance that maybe the cylinder is still intact!

also if i were to go buy brake fuild where does it go in the 77 924

Check fluid level right away. Located in the right rear corner of the engine compartment when standing in front of the car looking at the engine. If fluid is low check for leaks at master cylinder located under the fluid resevoir, at each wheel cylinder and the brake lines. Rust and rotting rubber will rob your brakes.

i just checked the brake fluid, its out unfortunatly , im really hoping i didnt just accidently blow the master cylinder. It just started losing power tonight so maybe i caught it ahead enough that i need to add fluid and bleed my brakes.

i went to the store in another car and bought some brake fluid, going to learn how to bleed them tonight and do it in the morning.

i put some brake fluid in and pumped the brakes with the car off and it did seem to build up a bit of pressure, so i dont know if thats a good sign or not.

god im hoping i didnt screw myself over....

EDIT: i also felt around the MC, didnt feel any leaks but it is almost 3am so i cant see completely but ill check in the morning again

You most likely have a problem or the system would not have bled dry. No biggie, just relax and find the problem. It is either a very slow leak that finally ran ou dry, or you may have blown a hole in a rusty brake line. Whatever you do, locate the cause before trust the car to a drive.

so you dont think i just screwed myself? ive been readin stuff about it and it makes me nervous. But there may be a slow leak somewhere your right. i was plannin on drivin 6 hours tomorrow so this is setting me back a few hours...although probably good i fix it now than stranded on the road

EDIT: i went back out to check on the car and pumped the brake while it being off again, then started the engine and it went back to being no pressure. Im not sure if bleeding the brakes will help bring the pressure back or not. Hoping this is my only problem....

Buy a manual, then adjust your rear brakes.

Fluid loss is not good. You might get lucky with bleeding the system and adjusting the shoes, but I wouldn't trust it further than around the block in that situation.

Buy/Build a pressure bleeder:

http://faculty.ccp.edu/faculty/dreed/campingart/jettatech/bleeder/index.htm

Put the car in the air with all four tires off the ground.

Remove the wheels.

Check around each wheel for brake fluid (it had to go somewhere)

Repair the leak (Wheel cylinder, caliper, hose, and master cylinder are the common culprits)

Adjust the drums according to the manual.

Bleed the brakes with the pressure bleeder (or bleed manually with an assistant running the pedal while you work the bleed nipples)

With that said, I would strongly recommend the following:

Considering the age of the car, I would recommend replacing the rubber flex lines (braided stainless steel are my preference) and the rest of the rubber in the brake system, calipers (rebuild or buy rebuilt calipers) wheel cylinders and master cylinder.

Check the front rotors and drums for thickness and excessive wear.

Check the pads and shoes for wear.

There will be specs for wear in the manual. Replace if out of spec or if they are contaminated.

Once the broken parts are replaced, adjust the brake shoes to spec.

Then using a good quality brake fluid (DOT4, non-synthetic) with the pressure bleeder to bleed the system completely. Repeat until the pedal has good stable pressure with the engine off.

Good luck!
