Hey everyone, I have a question that has probably been answered before, but am gonna ask anyway.
My muffler is junk. It's some cheapy U.S. muffler of some kind, not sure. I removed the central muffler/resonator when I had new piping put in. It appeared fairly new, and I figure removing the resonator is why the baffles have broken loose. There is also another piece even further up the line, I think a catalytic converter, but it has a straight pipe through it...
I face a dillema now: do I go back stock (for roughly $160), or is there a decent sounding muffler out there that can handle not having a resonator on there? I would like a nice sounding, or even quiet sounding system.

Also, what is the difference in the muffler system from '76-'77 and '78-on? I see lots of places offering stock-like systems for '78-on, and they say they aren't compatible with the early-early cars.

Thanks!

I still have that Ansa exhaust! Have no clue though, what that entails, guess someone would have to take a peak under the car!

The early cars have a smaller round rear resonator and a spare tire well sized for a full size spare tire.

Later cars have an larger oval shaped muffler, and spare tire well sized for a compact spare.

To use the cat back from a later car in an early car, you would have to buy some new hangers for the exhaust, AND clearance the spare tire well for the oval resonator to fit.

I don't see what difference the spare tire would make as the entire exhaust system goes completely around it, if I'm not mistaken.
Also, didn't the '78s have a round muffler/resonator too?
