|
|
| Hi guys, I was wondering if I could grab some quick advice. Im debating on buying a 1980 924 Turbo, but I know pretty much nothing about Porsche's, I've been in the American scene for a while. The 9224 Turbo is the right price, but I was wondering if this car would be good for a track project. I want to be able to do a decent amount of work on it and I have no idea whats possible with these cars. As in I can't find and bigger turbos for them; do they make them? And are there a lot of other power upgrades possible, if so like what? Thank you guys so much! |

What ^^^he^^^ said.
There are also two forums on this board dedicated to the 924 Turbo, here and here, and one dedicated to racing toofahs, here.

Hmm... how bad is it?

A good track project? Sure, one of the best. A cheap track project? Nooooo...

You're going to have to be a lot more specific than that. What do you intend to do with the car? Just the odd fun track day with some mates or full-on series racing? Which series? Etc... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Depends, how big is your budget?
If you're looking for a road-race car, I might steer you towards a 944 or a 924S and suggest looking at Spec944 or SCCA ITS class racing. Lots of competition there and a well sorted package that is relatively easy to get into. The cars are reliable and robust and just fast enough to have fun while learning and honing your driving skills.
If you just want to mess around doing track days, then a 924T could work provided you've bought one in very good shape or you're willing to do the work to make it happen.
There is an Upgrade planning thread stickied in the "Performance Upgrades" section. Check it out and read up on all of it. Take it a bit at a time so you can truly understand some of what is involved in modifying these cars before you decide. _________________ Stefan

| Thanks Guys! Sorry about the repeated post, but to answer some of your questions the car is 3500 obo and in great condition for a 31 year old car with only 65k on it. I guess what I meant is like there a lot of upgrades for these engines? Like bigger turbos (i couldnt find any), camshafts, heads, etc. Not OEM, performance is what Im looking for I guess. Im pretty much try to make something in between an odd fun track car and a full on race car, as in it has to be street legal, but have some serious bawls you know? |

Well, the suspension is mostly the same as the 924S and 944, so upgrades abound with proper mixing and matching.
Ideola offers some of the engine upgrade parts (camshafts, valves, etc)
However, quite a lot of things will have to be custom made or modified to fit. I don't know much about the specific turbos used on these cars, so I'll let the 931 experts chime in on that aspect. I do know that the car desperately needs an intercooler and that is a custom job to fit. _________________ Stefan

| Why did you recommend a 924S for road racing? Is it NA or Turbo? Sorry about my lack of Porsche knowledge. |

| Sorry that was a stupid question, you were referring to their engine the 2.5l right? More options for them than the 2.0l. My bad. |

Yeah, the engine is the reason.
924N/A's run in ITB under SCCA and can do quite well, but there aren't very many of them running there as the 2.5L powered cars are more popular. _________________ Stefan

I'm a relative noob but I don't think these are a great choice for big power upgrades, you're better off with a 951. Bigger motor, intercooled, aftermarket support.
I'm not sure what kind of american cars you are into, but I think 924's are a very different world. You just can't go into a FLAPS and get what you need. Even some basic parts (hoses, sensors, etc) are NLA. I found there is a steep learning curve if you aren't familiar with the CIS system. _________________ 1982 931- Stock with MBC at 8psi

Sure, buy it and upgrade the brakes, upgrade the suspension, upgrade the drivetrain, put a wide body kit on it, put larger diameter rims and wider tires on it, brake coolers, tranny cooler, intercooler, and finally a bigger engine... or just save yourself a heap of money and time and buy a 951. Lol. Plus the water cooling of the turbo after shutdown is really nice. _________________ 87 924s
